DB 11 - How much Physical Activity is enough?
1) Grace Liebhart
1. How might an overweight person gain substantial health benefits by shifting from doing no physical activity to meeting the minimum recommendation of 30 minutes per day on most days of the week?
The person would lower their own mortality rate, increase cardiovascular endurance, loose weight, be overall in better shape to increase their lifeline. In a study that was done the participants lowered their mortality rate by 30%-47%.
2. Conduct a literature search using Google Scholar to identify the various benefits of regular physical activity that are not related to weight loss.
Physical activity is a primary and secondary prevention of several chronic diseases (e.g., cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, hypertension, obesity, depression and osteoporosis) and premature death. It not only improves physical health but also mental health. It can prevent or help to treat mental disorders or mental illness such as depression.
3. Based on the results of this literature search, devise a marketing campaign that could be used to encourage college students to regularly engage in physical activity.
My marketing campaign would be based on mental health to help physical health. I would offer a gym with different environments depending on what the individual is feeling that day. For instance, I would make a red room for anger it would have punching bags and such. A blue room for cardio to help calm down, green room would be more for the slower paced classes such as yoga or meditation. I feel as if this would be a very beneficial to those who are battling mental illnesses and out also encourages them to get into shape.
2) Karleigh,
1. An overweight person might gain substantial health benefits by shifting from doing no physical activity to meeting the minimum recommendation of 30 mins. per day because that person is used to not performing any type of physical activity and then whenever they start to perform even 30 mins of physical activity per day, they are burning off the calories that would normally just be sitting there and continuing to build up throughout the day/week.
2. Some benefits of regular physical activity that are not related to weight loss are whenever you are active, you are able to improve your mental health. Another main benefit is that you lower your chances of developing certain diseases in the joints, muscles, and nerves. One of the main things that you can help to prevent with exercise is cardiovascular disease, which is something that people who are overweight tend to have to deal with later in life. Another thing that physical activity can help is strengthen your bones and muscles, which can help you to be able to perform better and possibly allow yourself to complete more activities throughout the day.
3. College students should get into the habit of exercising every single day. No matter how long you partake in physical activity, it is important that this is something that we start at a young age. It is important that we start this at a young age so that we can help to prevent becoming overweight which then starts to effect things like your mental health, bones, muscles, and most importantly, your heart. By starting to make changes early, you can help yourself for things that you might experience down the road if you are not currently taking care of your body.
3) Justin,
While reading this article, I had found it interesting because I often wonder if I am getting enough physical activity each week. During the pandemic I think that many people struggled trying to stay physically active, I know that I have especially since all my classes have been online. It is important to at least get the minimum amount of physical activity each week that is recommended. If an overweight person doesn’t participate in any physical activity in a week, then shifts to the minimum amount of physical activity this can then provide health benefits for that person. The article states a study of people who regularly exercise, these people who exercise the recommended amount of 150 minutes each week had a 30% to 47% lower risk of dying. There are many other benefits to being physically active besides weight loss these can include lower blood pressure and improve heart health, improve sleep quality, reduce anxiety and depression, increase energy levels, improve memory and brain function, and improve joint pain and stiffness. A marketing campaign that I would advise to other college students to regularly engage in physical activity would be participating in the recommended amount of physical activity can help lead to a much healthier and happier life.
