Some people ignore the importance of good oral health, maintaining good oral health will help us to function more efficiently and have a healthy smile.
Tooth decay also know as dental caries or cavities are among the world’s most common health problem that is common in children, teenagers and older adults.
Eating healthy now can prevent ourselves from experiencing any health problem.
Formation:
Bacteria is always present in the mouth. Acids are then produced by these bacteria when you consume too much sugar and other carbohydrates.
Acids can cause minerals in your teeth to weaken and dissolve your enamel.
Once your enamel weakens, it makes your teeth vulnerable to cavities.
Signs and Symptoms:
When cavity is beginning, you may not feel any symptoms at all.
One of the early signs of tooth decay is white spots- a milky appearance that can be seen on smooth surface of the teeth.
Once the cavity penetrates deeper, you may experience toothache, sensitivity when eating sweet, and when drinking hot and cold beverages.
You may see visible holes in the pits and fissures on the occlusal surface of your teeth.
Severe cases may feel pain or pressure when you bite down.
Causes:
Foods that cling in your teeth for a long time- such as dairy, sweets like cookies, candy, cakes chips and sugar coated cereal are some examples that more likely to contribute in decay formation than foods that are easily washed away by saliva.
Frequent snacking-can give more fuel to bacteria to produce acids that can attach to your teeth and cause them to wear down.
Regular consumption of soda or other acidic beverages can develop a continuous acid bath all over your teeth.
Baby bottle caries-common on babies that are consuming milk and other sugar containing beverage that remain on their teeth for hours without brushing or rinsing can also develop tooth decay.
Brushing technique-plays an important role in promoting tooth decay. If you don’t brush your teeth after eating or drinking, formation of plaque-a sticky film that coats your teeth, due to eating sugar and starches and not cleaning your teeth properly can promote the first stage of decay.
Prevention and Benefits:
Even with good oral hygiene(brushing teeth regularly and flossing) or even not experiencing pain, regular visit to dentist, regular check up and cleaning can keep your teeth healthy overtime.
Eat variety of calcium rich foods that can help promote strong teeth and bones, some examples such as low fat or fat free milk-that can help lower the acid levels in the mouth, cheese that is high in calcium and contains phospahate that can help balance the ph levels inside the mouth,yogurt-has probiotics that can help against bad breath and gum disease, fortified soy milk, tofu, and dark green leafy vegetables.
