Externship Final Essay

Externship Summary Essay (100 pt): The purpose of the essay is to summarize your experiences and to perform a self-evaluation. The essay must be typed, 12 point font, one-inch margins, double-spaced, minimum of 1.5 pages and a maximum of 3 pages. Each essay should reflect the following format:

· Introductory paragraph

· Body discussing essay topics as well as information you view as important;

· Closing paragraph; summary and conclusions.

Essay topics (Essays can contain one or more of the following):

· Quality of training: Were you trained effectively to perform your job? Why or why not? Were there any barriers or obstacles that prevented you from learning the job? What did you like and/or dislike about the company and your position?

· Pace of the Operation: How did you find the pace of your work? What days were busier than others? What aspects of your job kept you busy?

· Sanitation and cleanliness: In your opinion, how effective was the sanitation program as it pertained to overall cleanliness and ambiance of the operation?

· Attention to business goals: Were the goals shared with you? If so, what was your specific role in achieving those goals?

· Customer experience: What marketing techniques did the operation utilize in ensuring guest satisfaction?

· People skills and management styles of establishment: What management style was the most effective with the FOH staff? What management styles could have improved the performance of the staff?

· Career Planning: What are your primary goals within the hospitality industry and did this externship help you realize these goals? Why or why not? Did you see advancement opportunities within the establishment and if so, what would you like to pursue? Did the externship change your future goals or the type of establishment you would like to work for? Did your externship offer you a position to stay on? If not, why?

Essay Grading: 100 Points Total

· 75 points: complete content that summarizes your experiences and reflects the views of your weekly Moodle postings and comments in threaded discussions. Do not copy and paste content from your weekly postings and discussions. The essay should be an overall reflection, both positive and negative, looking back on your cumulative experiences.

· 15 points: Was the essay organized in a way that allows the advisor and future students to understand your experience. Did you use introductory sentences, cover the topics above, and have conclusions?

· 10 points: Did your spelling and grammar allow the reader to clearly understand the points you were trying to make? Did frequent misspellings and poor sentence structure interfere with a reader’s ability to understand your experience?

Essays will be graded on complete content that summarizes your experiences and reflects the views of your weekly Moodle postings and comments in threaded discussions.
