Some of the best and smartest examinations of media’s role and impact on society can be found weekly on the podcast “On The Media,” which is produced by WNYC and aired on hundreds of NPR stations nationwide. A segment that aired last year ( https://www.wnycstudios.org/podcasts/otm/segments/what-running-cops-learned-cops ) seemed to fit well with our discussion of media and social justice. It was a discussion of the television program, “Cops,” which (to my shock) has been broadcast for more than 30 years, making it the longest-running reality TV show. In fact, it predates the term “reality television” that has dominated programming the past two decades.

This discussion stems from a project by documentarian Dan Taberski entitled “Running From Cops,” in which he examines the show’s cultural and societal impacts over its 30-year history. (If you are unfamiliar with “Cops,” don’t worry. YouTube has got you covered. ( https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=EL3RvzjkhV8Jk ) So, too, do plenty of other broadcast networks that show old episodes of the show.) Please listen to this podcast, and, as you do, consider the following: • Why do you think “Cops” has remained on the air for 30 years? What makes it appealing content? • Think about how “Cops” portrays police officers, the people being questioned and/or arrested by the police, crime, and the law enforcement profession. Then consider how each is presented to viewers. How does the show help shape our worldview of each of those groups? How accurate are these views, compared to reality? • Shows like “Cops” attempt to portray reality, but obviously, cannot do it. Still, do you think their content provides a greater benefit or greater harm to the audience? Explain your answer, citing at least one example from any reality television show illustrating your position.

Assignment: Your assignment is to construct a response of approximately 500 words addressing those three points, as well as any other related points you feel are relevant to our course. Please type your work in a Microsoft Word document, using a 12-point font, and double-spacing the text. Please upload it as an attachment to Blackboard
