ARTICLE SUMMARY

DUE DATE: Papers are due via Turn-It-In by May 17, 11:59PM. Nothing will be accepted after this. Remember, extra credit means this is optional . Not doing this assignment will not count against you.

OVERVIEW: You will be summarizing and analyzing an article from specified news or magazine sources. You should submit three article summaries

WHAT YOU NEED

The article(s): You may use articles on any health, healthcare delivery, or health policy-related topic related to material covered in the HESC 402 health care systems class. Articles may be from one of the following major newspapers: LA Times, OC Register, NY Times, Sacramento Bee, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal; or major magazines The Economist, Time, Newsweek, The New Yorker, or The Atlantic Monthly.

AVOIDING PLAIGARISM

The writing must be your own. Copying or paraphrasing sentences from the article without proper citation is never acceptable.

WRITING YOUR SUMMARY

1. Read the article. Identify key points: the topic, point of view presented, evidence (if any) presented. Circling these points will help you find them when you write. Do your best to understand the article. Write notes in the margin and use a highlighter to mark important sections.

2. Write the summary. The overall summary should be between 500-750 words. You should summarize the piece, and discuss your analysis. Avoid "lifting" sentences from the article (ie, avoid over-reliance on direct quotations to fill space). Use your own words. An appropriate use of quotations in this assignment is the situation where you wish to discuss something that the author wrote. In this case you may quote the appropriate statement and then proceed to discussing the point you wish to make about the quotation. Be sure to relate the article to at least one topic or concept covered in class. In other words, bring something that you learned in class into your discussion of the article.

Possible plan. The suggested numbers of paragraphs and sentences are guidelines. You do not have to match the organizational recommendations exactly. There are also other possible ways to organize the summary.

· Introduction/Background (the overall topic of your paper): 1 paragraph. Make sure to include 2-4 sentences describing your interpretation of the purpose of the article you are summarizing.

· Body of your summary: 2-3 paragraphs. Summarize the article. Relate the article to at least one topic or concept covered in class.

· Final Discussion: 1 paragraph. What you think this all means in light of something you learned in class? Do you agree or disagree based on what you have learned in class as well as your values? What is or are your main takeaway learning point(s) and reaction(s)?

3. Revise your summary. A best practice for writing is always to revise at least once. The best way is to have someone else (who has not read the article) read your rough draft. Then have your reader describe the article back to you in his or her own words. Where they go wrong in their description is where you need to make changes. What readers say will clue you in to anything you've left out. Then revise your paper as needed.

WRITING TIPS FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT

Be sure to cover the summary and your discussion: Students often provide too much detail on the summary and not enough on the discussion. It is important to provide the information on what the article says, but also to discuss your thoughts on the matter based on lessons we have covered in class.

Don't copy phrases verbatim. If you can't use your own words, read the article again to make sure you understand it. Strive to understand the article, then discuss it in your own words.

APA Citations in the text of the summary. You are required to include an APA citation for the article you use for your summary and for any other sources you refer to.

FORMAT FOR YOUR PAPER

· Your assignment must be typed. It may be single or double-spaced.

· Leave 1-inch margins on the sides and at the top and bottom of each page. Use Font Size 12.

· Your summary should be 500 – 750 words in length.

Be sure to keep a copy.
