SSC 200 (Sections 08 & 09): Homework #1 Social Science Literature, Fall 2017
Assignment Description In this homework assignment, you will demonstrate competency for Student Learning Outcome #5. As described in the syllabus, “students will demonstrate the ability to locate and utilize primary source, peer-reviewed social science literature using library and electronic resources.” This task mirrors the work that social scientists do when they are constructing a literature review. Note that you must complete this task successfully in order to pass the course. First, you will select a particular subset of research relating to sexual violence, around which your article hunting will focus (e.g., sexual harassment, prison rape, child sexual abuse, sex trafficking, sex offenders). You will locate three peer-reviewed research articles that present original data on your topic from the list of journals provided below. Each of your articles must come from a different journal. Submit a copy of the first page from each article with your report. Second, you will write a 3-4 page report (double-spaced) that describes your search process and compares and contrasts the three articles you identified. The majority of your discussion should focus on describing each article (research design, findings, significance, etc.) and how they relate to one another. Assessment Students will be assessed on: a) their ability to locate three peer-reviewed research articles that focus on a particular type of or research area related to sexual violence; and b) their ability to demonstrate an understanding of the respective findings and how they relate to one another. Deadline This assignment is due at the beginning of class on Thursday, September 26. You should submit the first pages of your three articles and your report. Your submission must be stapled. Late submissions will be deducted a half letter grade per day of absence.
