Homework 5: Behavioral assignment: Regression
21 points
In this assignment, we'll be analyzing two regression tables that arise from a dataset previously mentioned in data hunts, the quality of. These regressions feature each kind of variable that we've discussed, and you should have what you need to complete it by the time we discuss it. Your goal is to interpret these regressions and demonstrate that you can use a regression table with a special focus on the regression coefficients to answer questions about a social scientific problem.
What you have to do to receive an A
Regression 1: A country's research and development (R&D) budget vs. net migration (our independent variable) (12 pts)
1. Write the regression equation. (2 points)
1. NOTE You may use the format seen in the powerpoint slides, or you may replace Y' and x with the names for the variables, but the coefficients must be written in the right places for full credit
2. Interpret the coefficients. What do the intercept and the slope mean in this regression table? (4 points)
1. NOTE: It's ok to use the 'boilerplate' language, but you must describe it in the terms of the variables in the regression (i.e. a 1 unit decrease in the number of doctors..., or when foreign direct investment is 0 then our research and development budget is...)
3. What does the regression equation say a country's R&D budget is if it had 100,000 migrants enter the country? (3 points)
4. Take the first letter of your name, and the number of its position in the alphabet (A = 1, B = 2, C = 3, and so on). Multiply that number by 10,000. Then, use the regression equation from part 2 to get the country's R&D budget if there had that many migrants enter. (3 points)
1. Example: If I were doing it, the first letter of my name is B. B's position is 2, so I'd be figuring out the country's budget if they had 20,000 migrants entering the country.
Regression 2: A country's revenues (how much money a government takes in, assumed in U.S. Dollars) vs. whether their constitution mentions a right to strike or not. (11 pts)
1. Write the regression equation. (2 points)
2. Interpret the coefficients. What do the intercept and the slopes mean in this regression? (4 points
1. NOTE: This is a discrete variable, and the reference category is that the constitution does NOT mention a right to strike.
3. What does the regression equation say a country's revenue is if their constitution does mention a right to strike? (5 points)
