Question Answers

How deeply should we analyze findings?

You need to have 3 or more quotes to support each part of your typology, and you need to summarize and analyze each of your quotes. When you code and analyze your interview transcripts, look for interesting findings that come from comparing people or points in time.

How can you tell if one factor or another is more impactful? Coding?

In your analysis, look for evidence for macro and micro factors that impact first gen students. Lay out evidence for both, and make an argument claiming if either has a greater influence. Be sure to fully support your conclusion with evidence and analysis.

Are we allowed to use transcripts of the experts interviewed?

No, I’d like for you to only use transcripts of the 4 students.

How long should our interview questions be?

Use full sentences, and don’t have them be too complex. You can have questions and follow-up questions.

Are we allowed to go over the page limit?

Page constraints:   ● Part 1 -- 1 page, single spaced; 12pt font (ok if you go

over up to 2 pages)  ● Part 2 -- 3-5 pages, double-spaced, 12pt. Font (you

cannot go over 5 pages)  ● Appendix of interview transcripts: no page limit, single

spaced, 12pt font (unlimited)

How many macro and micro factors should we address?

2 each (however, this might look different if you are making your own typology)

Do you recommend watching the film with subtitles?

Sure, if that helps. Still watch with sound, tho, because it’s important that you listen closely to what the students are saying.

Do I have to turn the transcript in? Yes, you need to turn the transcript in, at the end of the document you turn in, as an appendix. You also need to analyze quotes from the transcript in your findings section.

Do we make up our own questions for the transcripts?

Nope! Just analyze the transcripts. The only interview question you need are in part 1, and that

has nothing to do with the transcripts.

Transcribing takes forever. You’re telling me :P

Are the questions in part 1 based on the main class research question?

You can use our main research question or another one. Just be sure that it;s well suited for interview based research/

Can we ask yes/no questions, and then add “elaborate” at the end of it? Ie “Are you nervous about college? Explain…?”

Yes, but not for all of the questions. Also, start more open and then more specific questions. Ie: “How are you feeling about starting college? … Do you feel excited?...nervous?”

Do you include tables in qualitative research?

Sometimes. But not this time because the sample is so small.

Do I need to highlight or code on the transcripts I turn in?

You need to engage in your own coding and analysis process but you do not need to show your coding in you appendix. You can if you want.

Can the transcriptions be “rough” (missing words here and there, no exact)

Totally! No need for perfection here.

How would we incorporate quotes into the paragraphs?

I think the best thing for you to do is to refer to the interview based articles that are on the course website for an example.

In part 2, it asks what kind of analysis we did…how to approach this question?

Use my slide on Abductive analysis for that question.

Can you give us an example for interview questions?

There are examples in the lecture slides.

I’m having trouble with the typology portion on the assignment….

Follow the template, that will give you the structure you need to work through the challenge.
