Read 14:25-33, which is broadly about “the cost of discipleship”:
a) Consider 14:25-26. If you have never read these words before, they probably sound quite surprising coming from Jesus. What do you think he means here? Make sure you keep 14:25-33 broadly in mind as you answer
b) Consider 14:28-32. What do you think would be the “cost” of following Jesus? Again, keep 14:25-33 broadly in mind as you answer
Read each of the following parables. It is important to keep in mind that a parable is different from an allegory. In an allegory, every detail of a story corresponds to something else, whereas in a parable, there is a central point that is illustrated, and the details may or may not correspond to something else. So, for each parable, (i) try to identify the “point” of each illustration, then (ii) try to explain the “lesson” of each parable, which will be somehow parallel to the “point” of the illustration. To be concrete, recall the parable of the sower in Luke 8:4-15. I would say that the “point” of the illustration is that the condition of a given kind of soil affects the fruit that seed bears in that soil. The “lesson” is that the condition of a person’s heart determines the effectiveness that the word of God has for them. Make sure you read the text carefully and explain your answers thoroughly, with detail. If I were writing an answer for homework, I would use more detail than I have given in the above paragraph, but hopefully this example gives you the basic idea of what I want.
