Homework:  Earth Observatory Online Article Summary  ASSIGNMENT DESCRIPTION:  Go to  http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Features/  and select any article published between 2005‐

Present.  There are articles on many topics; choose something that interests you.  Please avoid blogs and interviews.  Also, make 

sure that you read ALL pages – check the bottom of the first page to navigate to subsequent pages if necessary.   In a well‐written 

essay (400 word minimum, typed or neatly handwritten) summarize the article, make clear and specific references to subject 

matter and vocabulary from lectures and/or textbook, and also provide your personal viewpoints.  Write the entire essay in your 

own words – DO NOT PLAGIARIZE!!!!!!!!!!   See below for the rubric which will be used when grading your essay.  When finished, submit 

your essay to the appropriate Canvas Online Inbox.

REQUIRED – WRITTEN SUMMARY/ANALYSIS (UP TO 5PTS):    

5pts: Essay thoroughly summarizes the overall content by making sound generalizations and using specific examples where appropriate.  Essay indicates a 

strong attempt at understanding and conveying what the student has read. 

4pts: Essay adequately summarizes the content, but has omitted some key info and/or failed to make good generalizations, leading to confusion or lack of 

clarity.  Essay indicates a reasonable attempt to understand and convey what the student has read. 

3pts or less: Essay includes some factual information about the content which was read, though it fails to summarize or generalize.  Essay indicates a limited 

attempt at understanding and conveying what the student has read. 

REQUIRED – REFERENCE TO COURSE CONTENT (UP TO 3PTS):   

3pts: Essay makes numerous connections to course subject matter through use of course vocabulary, references to course concepts, and/or strong comparisons 

and contrasts with material discussed in text or classroom.  There are no factual errors. 

2pts: Essay makes 1 or 2 connections to subject matter through use of course vocabulary, references to course concepts, and/or comparisons and contrasts 

with material discussed in text or class.  Factual errors may be present and/or obvious connections are missed. 

1‐0pts: Essay makes NO (or extremely vague) connections to course subject matter. 

REQUIRED – PERSONAL VIEWPOINT / CRITIQUE (UP TO 2PTS):   

2pts: The student has included thoughtful personal viewpoints and/or critical commentary about the article using the first person (i.e. “I” statements). 

1‐0pts:  The student has included NO (or extremely vague) personal commentary about the article.  First person (i.e. “I” statements) not used. 

REQUIRED – COLLEGE LEVEL ENGLISH WRITING (ZERO OR MINUS POINTS):    

0pts:  The essay is written at a college level, including use of well constructed sentences and paragraphs and college level vocabulary.  It is easy to understand, 

makes logical points, and has been proofread. 

‐1 pt:  The essay may not have been proofread and contains 2‐4 of the following common writing mistakes:  inaccurate capitalization, misspellings, inaccurate 

punctuation and/or grammar, missing paragraph breaks, incomplete sentences (sentence fragments), run‐on sentences, and/or awkward wording.  Consider 

participating in the Writing Center and/or Writing Across the Curriculum programs at the Learning Resources Center.  Writing is a critical skill! 

‐2 pts:  The essay is difficult and/or nearly impossible to understand and contains many of the writing mistakes described above.   I strongly urge you to 

participate in the Writing Center, Writing Across the Curriculum, and/or ESL programs at the Learning Resources Center.  Also, I urge you to meet with your 

counselor for advice on which English or ESL courses to take or retake.     Writing is a critical skill!
