1. Select either Argument Essay #1: Dangerous Drugs or Argument Essay #3: At Liberty on page 240 of your textbook, or any controversial topic that interests you.
2. Research and select 3 to 5 sources that you will use to support your argument. These sources must be from a reputable newspaper, magazine, or academic source.
3. Summarize each source into a 4-8 sentence paragraph, and place the in-text citation at the end. Example: .......................................(Smith, "Americans and Liberty") or (Jones 234). Please go to Owl MLA Link and read about in-text citations.
4. After you have summarized the sources, ask yourself what each of these sources is telling you about the subject. Then write 2-3 sentences that will begin the source summary. After that, add a few concluding thoughts about your source. (see the sample summary with analysis file below)
5. Make a list of 4 to 5 main ideas that you wish to discuss in your argument. Rewrite the list of ideas in the order you want them to appear in your essay.
6. Outline: this should be a guide for the arrangement of your essay, but do NOT include this outline when you submit your essay:

• THE STATEMENT OF OPPOSING VIEWPOINTS AND YOUR RESPONSE TO THESE OPPOSING VIEWS RELATED TO THE PROBLEM
1. State the opposing position.
2. Explain the opposing position.
3. Why does your opposition hold such an opinion?
4. Why is your opposition wrong?
5. Why is your position correct?
IV. CONCLUSION
• SUMMARY OF YOUR EVIDENCE AND A RESTATEMENT OF THE THESIS.
7. Create a Works Cited page according to the standards of MLA.
