Academic Integrity

         Definition of Academic Integrity

In  Academic Integrity at MIT , “A Handbook for Students” webpage, it says:

Honesty is the foundation of good academic work. Whether you are working on a problem set, lab report, project or paper, avoid engaging in plagiarism, unauthorized collaboration, cheating, or facilitating academic dishonesty. Follow this advice:”

Definition of Integrity in general

What is integrity in general?

Merriam Webster’s definition of integrity is:

1: firm  adherence  to a code of especially moral or artistic values  INCORRUPTIBILITY

2: an unimpaired condition  SOUNDNESS

3: the quality or state of being complete or undivided : COMPLETENESS

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/integrity

When something is “corrupt,” it is ruined. A person of integrity is not ruined by lies, cheating or being divided between the truth and falsehood.

When a thing has integrity, it holds together and is neither “divided against itself” nor falling apart.   - Marcielle Brandler

Most businesses and campuses have rules concerning honesty in their handbooks.

Exercise:

Check out your business or campus handbook and explain what it says about academic integrity. How do you feel about what it says? Is it fair?

We imprison ourselves when we cheat. We have ruined our reputations.

In an article called, “US election: Melania Trump 'plagiarised' Michelle Obama”, we read:

Donald Trump's wife, Melania, took centre stage on the first day of the Republican National Convention but faced accusations that a portion of her speech plagiarised Michelle Obama.

Her speech, which brought the convention to its feet, had themes of inclusivity, honesty and hard work.

Commentators noticed similarities with Mrs Obama's 2008 convention speech.

But Mr Trump's team said Mrs Trump used "common words" and blamed Hillary Clinton for the row.

"There's no cribbing of Michelle Obama's speech," said Paul Manafort, Mr Trump's campaign manager.

"I mean, this is, once again, an example of when a woman threatens Hillary Clinton, how she seeks out to demean her and take her down,'' he added.

It was Mrs Trump's first speech of the campaign and she had the help of a speechwriting team.

Republican National Committee Chairman  Reince Priebus  he did not blame Mrs Trump, but added he would "probably" fire the speechwriter over the controversy.

Earlier, Mr Trump's communications adviser Jason Miller issued a statement saying a "team of writers" used her life's "inspirations" as source material.

Meanwhile Mr Trump himself  described  her speech as "absolutely incredible".

How the speeches compare

In a section, Mrs Trump said: "My parents impressed on me  the values that you work hard for what you want in life; that your word is your bond and you do what you say and keep your promise; that you treat people with respect."

Mrs Obama's speech in 2008  carried the lines: "And Barack and I were raised with so many of the same  values: that you work hard for what you want in life; that your word is your bond and you do what you say you're going to do; that you treat people with dignity and respect , even if you don't know them, and even if you don't agree with them."

Mrs Trump's speech continued: "[My parents] taught me to show the values and morals in my daily life. That is the lesson that I continue to pass along to our son. And we need to pass those lessons on to the many generations to follow, because we want our children in this nation to know that the only limit to your achievements is the strength of your dreams and your willingness to work for them."

Mrs Obama said: "And Barack Obama and I set out to build lives guided by these values, and pass them on to the next generations. Because we want our children, and all children in this nation, to know that the only limit to the height of your achievement is the reach of your dreams and your willingness to work for them."

The Slovenian-born former model had used the speech to portray her husband as a tough but compassionate unifying force.

"He's tough when he has to be but he's also kind and fair and caring," Mrs Trump said.

"The kindness is not always noted, but it's there for all to see. That is one reason I fell in love with him to begin with."

Mrs Trump has kept a lower profile compared with other spouses of major candidates. Her husband's adult children have often been more prominent.

More on Plagiarism

Can a person go to jail for plagiarism? Not for doing so in an essay, but for copyright infringement, he can.

Can a person go to jail for copyright infringement in the U.S.? Prof. James Gibson, University of Richmond School of Law says on the The Media Institute website:

”We’ve all seen it.  Stick a movie in the DVD player, and up pops a scary message from law enforcement: if you infringe copyright, the feds will come after you.  Indeed, this threat is so ubiquitous that it has worked its way into popular perception; as any copyright expert knows from cocktail party conversations, laypeople seem to view copyright infringement as mostly a criminal matter.

It’s certainly possible to go to jail for violating copyright law, as long as the violation is willful and involves specific kinds or amounts of infringement.  And the good news for copyright owners is that more and more people are in fact facing criminal penalties for their infringement; the number of criminal convictions for intellectual property violations has increased 61% over the last decade.”

Happy Birthday song is intellectual property.

Many filmmakers do not use the actual birthday song in their films, because they would have to pay to use it. It is the intellectual property of the below company.

“…Warner/Chappell Music and its affiliate Summy-Birchard, Inc., demanded and received millions of dollars in copyright royalties from thousands of companies and individuals for the right to include renditions of Happy Birthday in movies, TV shows, music videos and the like basing their claim on a copyright registration dating back to 1935.”

Racist or Sexist Language

Racist Language

Racist language is any word or phrase that denigrates or belittles an individual or group by referring to his or her race. It is usually based on fear, ignorance, and stereoptypes and is rooted in the “us versus them,” way of thinking.

The “N” word: Notice that I do not even write the word for which the stands. In the 1950s, polite people used the word “colored” to indicate anyone who was not white. “Negro” was used specifically to describe black people. In the 1960s, the Black Panthers coined the phrase “Black Power.” Now we use the words “black” and African American, and other outdated words have fallen by the wayside. Using the N word in literature usually shows how wrong it is, or it merely serves as a tool to reveal character and is not usually meant, by the author, to be racist. See the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee for an example of this. Dr. Maya Angelou forbids anyone to speak the “N” word and reminds us that the word has a century of horrific treatment behind it. Many young artists feel that the “N” word should be used in a new way in order to appropriate it and change its meaning. Dr. Angelou (a poet and a wordsmith) refutes that argument. Prof. Brandler agrees with Dr. Angelou.

Here is a list of a few other improper words.

Gypped: means being cheated; it refers to gypsies, who have been stereotyped as thieves. “He gypped me” is a racist comment. In the same way, jewed is derogatory to Jewish people.

Indian Summer, Indian Giver: These mean false summer and one who takes back what he gave.

Philistine: Once I asked a student, “How do you say Palestinian in Arabic?” She said, “Philistine.” I was shocked, but a light bulb went on in my head. There has been so much racism directed against the Palestinians, even today. In the Bible, they are the bad people. Goliath, who was slain by David, who was a Philistine (Palestinian). The dictionary says Philistines are people who lack cultural values. They are also people from ancient Philistiawhich is southwest Palestine

-See Dictionary.com

Philistine(s), Palestine, Philistia: The Philistines are descendants of the Casluhim, who were sons of Mizraim, son of Ham, son of Noah (Genesis 10:14).

May 13, 1940 First Speech as Prime Minister to the House of Commons _______ The speech: On Friday evening last I received His Majesty's commission to form a new Administration. It as the evident wish and will of Parliament and the nation that this should be conceived on the broadest possible basis and that it should include all parties, both those who supported the late Government and also the parties of the Opposition. I have completed the most important part of this task. A War Cabinet has been formed of five Members, representing, with the Opposition Liberals, the unity of the nation. The three party Leaders have agreed to serve, either in the War Cabinet or in high executive office. The three Fighting Services have been filled. It was necessary that this should be done in one single day, on account of the extreme urgency and rigour of events. A number of other positions, key positions, were filled yesterday, and I am submitting a further list to His Majesty to-night. I hope to complete the appointment of the principal Ministers during to-morrow. the appointment of the other Ministers usually takes a little longer, but I trust that, when Parliament meets again, this part of my task will be completed, and that the administration will be complete in all respects. I considered it in the public interest to suggest that the House should be summoned to meet today. Mr. Speaker agreed, and took the necessary steps, in accordance with the powers conferred upon him by the Resolution of the House. At the end of the proceedings today, the Adjournment of the House will be proposed until Tuesday, 21st May, with, of course, provision for earlier meeting, if need be. The business to be considered during that week will be notified to Members at the earliest opportunity. I now invite the House, by the Motion which stands in my name, to record its approval of the steps taken and to declare its confidence in the new Government. To form an Administration of this scale and complexity is a serious undertaking in itself, but it must be remembered that we are in the preliminary stage of one of the greatest battles in history, that we are in action at many other points in Norway and in Holland, that we have to be prepared in the Mediterranean, that the air battle is continuous and that many preparations, such as have been indicated by my hon. Friend below the Gangway, have to be made here at home. In this crisis I hope I may be pardoned if I do not address the House at any length today. I hope that any of my friends and colleagues, or former colleagues, who are affected by the political reconstruction, will make allowance, all allowance, for any lack of ceremony with which it has been necessary to act. I would say to the House, as I said to those who have joined this government: "I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat." We have before us an ordeal of the most grievous kind. We have before us many, many long months of struggle and of suffering. You ask, what is our policy? I can say: It is to wage war, by sea, land and air, with all our might and with all the strength that God can give us; to wage war against a monstrous tyranny, never surpassed in the dark, lamentable catalogue of human crime. That is our policy. You ask, what is our aim? I can answer in one word: It is victory, victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory, however long and hard the road may be; for without victory, there is no survival. Let that be realised; no survival for the British Empire, no survival for all that the British Empire has stood for, no survival for the urge and impulse of the ages, that mankind will move forward towards its goal. But I take up my task with buoyancy and hope. I feel sure that our cause will not be suffered to fail among men. At this time I feel entitled to claim the aid of all, and I say, "come then, let us go forward together with our united strength."

16. sister-in-law                                ____________________________________________________

Make the nouns plural BEFORE deciding where the apostrophe goes with Possessive Nouns.

The Rules for Plurals

Words ending in ch, sh, x, z, s, or ss use an es ending. Church becomes churches, etc..

Many foreign words that end in o, especially those of Italian origin, use an s ending. Words that are musical fit into this category, like sopranobassoand alto. So do radio and silo, and kimonos.

If it ends in and is preceded by a vowel, add s (e.g., patiostereo, and shampoo).

Other words that end in o use an es ending (e.g., heropotato, and halo).

When a word ends in a y that is preceded by a consonant, change the to i and then add es. Thus, baby becomes babies

When a word ends in a y preceded by a vowel, put on the end, as in attorneys. Proper nouns, like Kennedy, cannot be changed; thus, Kennedies is incorrect. Emmy must be Emmys, not Emmies . But add es to the end of a proper noun ending in s or z, as in Parks and Martinez, to make the plurals.

The plural forms of words that end in lff, or fe are made with ves, as in calves and wolves. Exceptions: safe, belief, roof, sheriff, and chief, which add to make the plurals.

Child (which is from the Middle and Old English) becomes children

Some words stay the same in both singular and plural forms, such as moosedeertroutfish (although fishes can be used poetically).

Examples of words that are always plural in form are athleticsscissors, and thanks

Exercise

Write three words that always take the plural form. Some answers are suggested below.

1. ______________

2. ______________

3. ______________

Answers: civics, trousers. Choose your own not on this list.

Subject/Object Chart

The “Subject/Object Chart” is my own creation and cannot be found in other sources. Notice that the subject is the main person in the sentence. A sentence does not always have an object (i.e., the one who receives the action or thought created by the subject). The object does not do anything. The object is acted upon. You and it are in parentheses, because they do not change from the subjective to the objective case. They stay in the same format.
