WRITING YOUR ASSIGNMENT:  This assignment must be completed individually.  You must use Harvard referencing system.  Your work must indicate the number of words you have used. Written assignments must not exceed the specified maximum number of words. When a written assignment is marked, the excessive use of words beyond the word limit is reflected in the academic judgement of the piece of work which results in a lower mark being awarded for the piece of work (regulation 6.70).  Assignment submissions are to be made anonymously. Do not write your name anywhere on your work. Write your student ID number at the top of every page.  Where the assignment comprises more than one task, all tasks must be submitted in a single document.  You must number all pages.

SUBMITTING YOUR ASSIGNMENT: In order to achieve full marks, you must submit your work before the deadline. Work that is submitted late – up to five working days after the published submission deadline - will be accepted and marked. However, the element of the module’s assessment to which the work contributes will be capped with a maximum mark of 40%.

Work cannot be submitted if the period of 5 working days after the deadline has passed (unless there is an approved extension). Failure to submit within the relevant period will mean that you have failed the assessment.

ASSIGNMENT QUESTION

Based on the setting and scenario:

You are required to write three answers to the following tasks.

 Provide an introduction paragraph that explains your chosen setting and in which you are going to base your discussion.  Write your answers using paragraphs. Provide sub-headings to indicate which task you are answering.  Write a short conclusion summarising your discussions.

Pick one of the following settings:

• Day Centre • Long stay rehabilitation ward in an acute hospital • Supported living block • A setting of your choice you are familiar with or have worked in.

Scenarios - On the agenda for discussion at Team Meeting

A team meeting has been called to discuss a series of incidents that have recently taken place in your chosen setting:

 Two co-workers were overheard debating letting older people with chronic illness die as there treatment is too expensive and it better spent on younger people.

 Two co-workers were overheard debating not allowing disabled children to survive child birth.

 A care assistant is refusing to accompany a patient while she is in the multi-faith room for Friday prayers because is not Muslim.

Task1

Outline and discuss the core ethics and values that should underpin care in your chosen setting, also identify some of the resourcing issues which may impact upon care delivery.

This should be completed using information provided in your lecturers and your own personal research from core texts within 900 to 1000 words. (40 marks)

There is an expectation that you include some of the following depending on chosen setting:

 You must identify the legal and regulatory framework which underpins the setting. Care Act, Mental health Act, Human rights act FREDA principle, Health and Safety Act  Summarise codes of practice in relation to ethics and values. E.g. Principle of Public life, role of CQC.  Organisational Codes of conduct, and Policy and Procedures.  Safeguarding, issues around doing no harm.

Task 2

Discuss factors which may have influenced the development of the personal ethics and values held by the individuals in the items for discussion on the team meeting agenda. Discuss the risks for the individuals and organisations concerned within 500 to 600 words.

Points to consider

There is an expectation that you include some of the following when discussing each item on the agenda.

 Identify how service users and staff rights are promoted in health and social care.  Discuss ethical dilemmas that may arise when balancing individual rights and duty of care.  Discuss how personal prejudices, are derive from components of culture e.g. religion, family, etc. for each of the agenda items.  Discuss how lack of knowledge and fear may influence our personal values.  Equality Act - not to collude in discrimination.

Task 3

Outline appropriate ways to resolve the issues discussed at the team meeting whilst maintaining professional boundaries within 200 to 300 words. (20 marks)
