1.Mead and others argue that communication can create a social reality. These theorists are sometimes called social constructionists. How does communication create a social reality? Use an example from your life to demonstrate your answer. Include a definition of intersubjectivity in your answer.

How does Tannen distinguish between report and rapport in gender communication?  Do you agree with her?  Watch the following video by John Gray.  How would you contrast Gray with Tannen’s theory?  Are they similar or very distinct?

6. Reflect on the lecture discussion of Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin.  What is the double bind?  Do you think that women still face these challenge in today’s communication environment?

9. Mass media and social media is now guided by something I like to call the cycle of outrage. This means that media often promote division and anger as a way to sell themselves and increase users. As the election approaches, do you think this cycle is having a negative impact on democracy?

10. What about films, TV shows, music and art? We are trained to think of these practices as mere entertainment, but can they have a persuasive dynamic as well? Have you ever felt a movie or a song had an agenda? What are some examples?

11. Do people sometimes behave differently in groups than they would has individuals? Why do they sometimes behave worse in groups?
