Homework # 2
Introduction to Mass Communication, 0380101 09:00 - 09:50 (Su,Tu,Thur)
Fall Semester
__________________________________________________________________
Objective of Exercise:
This exercise aims to develop your ability to break the bond between medium and
content, and attempt to understand how to read the content independently. It also
aims to test your understanding of the medium’s effect on the message, according to
Mcluhan’s theory. Throughout all this, you should be able to understand how the
progression and development of media technology changes the identity of the subject
it portrays
Method of Exercise:
What is required of you in this homework is to examine the media progression of a
certain brand, franchise, idea, product, whatever cultural output there is. It can be
related to media (like a comic book character or a television show), or something not
necessarily related to industry (something as random as a fast-food sandwich). After
which, you need to expose yourself in every medium that has portrayed, screened,
displayed this content in any shape or form, be it visually (TV, cinema, print), audibly
(radio, podcats) , interactively (theatre, game, apps). and analyze your experience.
What should you write about:
The analysis should be a qualitative work that mixes your detailed observation of
dealing with the medium, along with your own impressions on it. A good writer mixes
between clear concise analysis and philosophical contemplations. Take your time
writing and try to enjoy your experience, and end with a general conclusion. It will
also be appreciated if you were to accompany your work with research (but not
obligatory)
You will need to consider the following very carefully:
• Focus on the time elements, and make sure that the mediums you subject yourself
to are done chronologically; starting with print, tv, and moving forward in that
order.
• In the case you are not able to find a certain medium (a print magazine of your
subject) then the second best option is to check it out online and write about it.
