Home living pt 1 I believe books should be added about cooking, different fruits and vegetables children eat, multicultural photos, dolls, and pretend clothing. Center should also be labeled above center on wall or near it. As well as the items in home living. Also labeled with the number of children allowed in the center. Books about community workers, cooking etc. Observational notes and pictures I observed 4 children at 0900-0917 in home living. The children pulled out some of the food from the cabinets, sat them on the table. Then sat at the table. 2 children sat and 2 pretended to be waiters at a restaurant. One child pretended to write down an order which the customer requested bananas and pineapples. The children all communicated and pretended to serve food and eat the food. One child pretended to be upset that she requested bananas and got apples. The waiters fixed the order, apologized, and gave the customers hugs. The children set up the table with one plate, one fork and one cup. The waiters used theirs hands to bring over food and sat it on the plates. I observed children at 0930-0948 10/18/2021 Free flow play There were 4 children. One child asked his teacher for assistance in putting on a firefighter vest and hat. One child sat and rocked her baby on the bench with a small pretend brush and brushed her hair. Two children picked up the phones and pretended to be talking on the phone with one another. The children on the phone talked about missing the mommy and daddy. One child mentioned their mom was at work and that mom will come to school to pick her up after lunch. The child that dressed as the firefighter asked the other children “do you need me to save you?” The other children would laugh and say, “there is no fire here.” The child with her baby put the baby in the sink and pretended to give a bath.  I observed children at 0950-1015 10/26/2021 The teacher brought in a bin of props to allow children to dress up as a scare crow. The children immediately entered the center and began to put on all the clothes in the bin. One kid put on cowboy boots and another on a plaid purple shirt. The children discovered a red cloth that they both realized weren’t clothes so one suggested they use it as a tablecloth. The children had walkie talkies that they pretended to call each other one. Kid 1: Hello Milah Kid 2: Hello John Kid 1: are you dressing up to come over Kid 2: yes and i will also bring pumpkin potato pie. Kid 1: ok will it be warm? Kid 2: of course who eats cold pumpkin potato pies?” Kid 1: well ok bye. Both children then asked for assistance in buttoning up the plaid shirts and asked to swap shoes. Kid 1: I am switching shoes with her Teacher: Awesome job sharing. The children then sat at the table and pretended to have pie. Kid 2: do you like my pie i put a pumpkin inside but it couldn’t fit so i smashed it all up. Kid 1: ok i like smashed up pie thank you. The teacher then gave children one minute to clean and swap for centers. Both children undressed and said see you in blocks. I observed children at 1019-1036 10/26/2021 Children entered the center and started to put on the props. One kid asked “Miss Taneisha can you untie my shoes so i can change into the cowboy boots. Kid 2: are these walkies real? Teacher: no but you can pretend that they are. Kid 1: immediately whispers* we have to save the birds or the scare crow will eat them. Kid 2: ok but no one wants to buy my clothes. Kid 1: ill buy your clothes here’s 2 dollars. Give 2 dollars out of the register. The kids then began to play in the kitchen. Kid 1: Miss Taneisha I’m a cowgirl chef could you tie my apron? Teacher: Of course I can. Kid 1: Miss Taneisha me and my sister went to spooky empire and i was afraid. Teacher: well did you have any fun? Kid 1: of course I did I was just a little afraid not a lot of afraid. Teacher: ok I’m glad you enjoyed your time there. Children then rotated to a different center (Photos of children faces were not allow)

Assessment and Analysis Home living sits in the back right corner of the classroom next to a teachers closet and small computer area for children’s assessment. Home living is made of wooden shelves and benches with pretend kitchen area. There is an opening that’s about 200m wide for children to enter the area of this center is 160m5 1/2 ft by 250m 7 1/2 ft. Directly in the middle of the center sits a round child size wooden table with two wooden chairs. Under the table are purple and blue area rugs. When you enter the area to the right you will find a wooden ironing board and iron on top. Right of the ironing board is a wooden stove which has a cooktop, temperature knobs and an oven. In between the stove and sink sits a small wooden shelf about 2 ft tall. On top of this shelf holds a red and blue pretend cash register, a pink cake mixer, pink coffee maker, pink mini microwave, and yellow clock. To the right of this shelf, you would find a wooden sink with a white bucket that sits inside with red handles for turning water on and off. Underneath are two cabinet doors that holds pretend dishes and food inside. Next to the sink is another small wooden shelf that is about 3 1/2 tall. On top of this shelf sits a desktop telephone, measuring tape and a silver teapot. Below sits a cradle with baby doll of all races. Right of the sink is a four-tier shelf with open storage space. The walls are light blue with four hooks to hold pretend clothes of a firefighter, teacher and student, and construction worker. Photos of each job hangs next to the hooks of the workers. Below is a small wooden bench with a red cushion for sitting. Right of the wooden bench is a wooden office desk about 3 1/2 feet tall. The left side of the desk holds a hook with green cooking mittens. Inside the desk cabinet holds a small red vacuum cleaner, coat holder, and broom and duster. On top of the desk is a small mice and keyboard. Under the desk is a square wooden cube filled with dress up clothes. Two shelves sit to the right with shoes. On the far right of Home living you will find an open rectangular shelf each shelf holds items. One has hats, below are purses, next to hats is a doctor kit small mailbox, grocery bag and puppet. On top is a puppet show shelf, plant, calculator, and another small pink cash register. Also, there is a small cone shaped shelf that holds blue bandage kit and yellow and black construction box. Outside home living you will find a clothesline for hanging and drying clothes and a small wooden basket with clothes for hanging. The kitchen cabinets and another wooden shelf divides this area from blocks. Blocks is the center next to home living. Children have access to the after-circle time and or when the teacher opens it up. Home living is one of the preferred centers from all the children. Children are pretty good about how they treat the material in the center. Although they have a difficult time cleaning up the items before rotation, they respect each other’s space as well as all the materials. Small group time is typically when children break into small groups, and which is called free flow. The teacher uses a timer for rotation of the centers. The kids are in each center for 5-10 minutes. The center support cognitive development by giving children the opportunity to use the brains by real life experiences and pretend play with dress up clothing of the jobs either their parents work and or teacher for example. There are small babies and babie clothes for children to dress babies and feed and rock them. There is a desk with a computer for children to pretend administrative work. Children learn to speak and pretend with the peers with pretend roles and how they feel. Children are inspired to communicate their wishes and speak in the perspective of their pretend roles. There is no material in rotation based upon observations. Additional material that is available to children are typical items the supervising teacher has brought from home as props or observations from a lesson taught. For example, you may see a photo of a clothesline. The children were taught about clothes for two weeks and how we wear and take care of them. This gave the children the opportunity to use real life experiences in play. The children use some of the same items every day. Although they don’t tend to get bored of the same material, I think it is important for children to explore new things each week to expand their cognitive development. The children always ask to go to home living versus any of the other available centers which is great but giving them the chance to explore different material helps with their development.
