Introduction
Over the past few days, there has been a constant increase in the number of patients admitted to the Infectious Diseases Unit of NCLEX Memorial Hospital with a particular infectious disease. The ages of these patients might play a critical role in the method used to treat the patients. The aim of this study is to perform a detailed statistical analysis of the ages of patients suffering from this disease.
The data for this study was obtained from a sample of 60 patients suffering from this infectious disease who had been admitted to the Infectious Diseases Unit of NCLEX Memorial Hospital. The Patient’s Client Number, Infectious Disease Status and Age were noted for each of the 60 patients and the data was used for further statistical analyses.
In the data set, the variable ‘Patient #’ gives the Client Number of the patient.
The variable ‘Infectious Disease’ defines the patient’s infectious disease status. A ‘Yes’ denotes that the patient is suffering from the particular infectious disease and a ‘No’ indicates that the patient is not suffering from the particular infectious disease It is a qualitative variable measured in the nominal scale of measurement.
The variable ‘Age’ defines the age of the patient. It is a quantitative variable measured in the interval scale of measurement.
Descriptive Statistics
| Descriptive Statistics of Age | |
| Mean | 61.25 |
| Median | 62 |
| Mode | 52 |
| Range | 39 |
| Standard Deviation | 9.070 |
| Variance | 82.258 |
The mean age of the patients is 61.25 years with a standard deviation of 9.07 years.
About 50% of the patients suffering from this infectious disease, who have been admitted to NCLEX Memorial Hospital, are 62 years or older.
The most frequently occurring age amongst the patients suffering from this infectious disease is 52 years.
The range of ages of patients suffering from this infectious disease is 39 years.
Confidence Interval of Mean Age
The 95% confidence interval for the mean age of the patients suffering from this infectious disease was found to be (58.96, 63.54) years.
Interpretation: If several patients suffering from this infectious disease are observed, then the mean age of the patients is expected to lie within 58.96 years to 63.54 years about 95% of the time.
Hypothesis Test
Hypothesis Research Question: Is the mean age of the patients suffering from this disease significantly greater than 60 years?
Null Hypothesis, H0: µ ≤ 60
Alternate Hypothesis, H1: µ > 60
Significance level, α = 0.05
Test Method: One-sample z-test for the mean
Decision Rule: Reject H0 if z > 1.645
Test Statistic, z =
P(t > 1.068) = 0.1429
We fail to reject the null hypothesis.
Our study shows that there is no evidence to support the claim that the mean age of patients suffering from this disease is greater than 60 years, at α = 0.05 significance.
Conclusion
The mean age of the patients is 61.25 years with a standard deviation of 9.07 years.
About 50% of the patients suffering from this infectious disease, who have been admitted to NCLEX Memorial Hospital, are 62 years or older.
There is no evidence to suggest that the mean age of patients suffering from this disease is significantly greater than 60 years; z = 1.068, p-value = 0.1429, at α = 0.05 significance.
