Poker
Introduction
The word poker is very popular especially in the world of casino. It is in casinos where the word poker is very popular and is commonly used by those who visit such a place. The term poker is used to refer to a family of card games that are normally combined with gambling strategy and skill. In other words, the game of poker can be viewed as betting since the outcome is not fixed. The outcome is either win or lose. There are most common things shared between the poker and the betting. The game of poker usually does depend and varies with the number of cards that are being played with. The game poker is very addictive especially to those who are beginners and forces one to even stake all he has. From the history, it is known that some people end up being bankrupt or broke as a result of poker game. In this game of poker, each player bets according to the rank they believe their hand is worth as compared to the player. There is also room for increase in the amount one is betting with as time goes by. Actually, poker has really increased its popularity since its beginning in the 20th century and has gone from being primarily a recreational activity confined to small groups of enthusiasts to a widely popular activity, both for participants and spectators, including the online players (Schawartz, 2017).
There are many stories that do explain the origin of poker. There are many told stories concerning the origin of poker. Actually, the history of poker is thought to have started or originated or evolved over some more than ten centuries from other various games that existed. These games that existed before the evolvement of poker involved basic principles of ranked cards or domino combinations and the use of buffing to deceive the opponent. Some of the historians d claim that poker’s origin is actually related to a domino-card game and this was normally played back in the tenth century. Others have a different version of history since they argue that, it is a descendant of the Persian card game As Nas, and this actually dates back to the 16th century.
There is usually a popular believe that a game similar to poker was first invented by the Chinese sometime before 970 AD, and this was when the Emperor Mutsung played the poker with his wife. There was a French game that was called Poque and a German game known as Ponchen and they became very popular during the 17 century (Branson, 2017). These games actually involved three cards that were handled by each player. With the issue of colonialism, then the French people moved with the game to their place of settlement, North America, while the Germans moved with their own game to where they settled during the same period of colonialism. The English speaking settlers in the region the Anglicized Poque to poker and adopted features of modern game, including the five cards for each player.
After the settling of the English speaking gentlemen, Johnathan Green made one of the earliest written references to poker when in his writing he mentioned the rules of cheating. Within a short period of time, poker spread up the Mississippi River and throughout the country thanks part to its popularity among the crews of riverboats transporting goods via that great water. The cheating game then started to supplant the popular cardsharp game of 3 card monte on the gambling circuit. This new game that was started was actually embraced by those who used to play it and was perceived as more challenging and honest (Schawartz, 2017). There was no issue of cheating with the new game introduced compared to the notoriously rigged three card game. It is this time that Green took more than a passing interest in the new game, and took it upon himself to formally name and document the cheating game. In fact, he did that and exposed it in his book named ‘An exposure of the Arts and Miseries of Gambling’ and that is how poker was born.
Since the poker was started, just over two centuries poker is believed to have never looked back. Its humble beginning was in the bans of Mississippi, it has been very popular. Its popularity has widely played game and has grown in leaps and bounds to evolve numerous variations and sub variations. The three games that have actually dominated the modern poker scene today include the five card draw, seven card stud and the Texas Hold’em (Branson, 2017). There has been some advancements with the poker game since it can even be played online. One is only supposed to log in and then be able to play with players who are online. This indicates that, poker is here to stay and instead, it is being developed with time.
