Essay Prompt:
Suggestions for Writing Your Essays
· Use the suggested essay guidelines as a framework for your creativity and intellectual expression, instead of as restrictive boundaries.
· Avoid expressing your ideas in absolutes. Works counter to showing analytical mastery of the material.
· Avoid hyperbole. It can be very hard to back up with specific facts and examples.
Hyperbole- exaggerated statements or claims.
· Do not use direct questions in your essays. Does not work in an analytical essay for a history class.
· Save direct quotes for unique statements. Better to express these ideas in your own voice with proper citation. Making it your own shows analytical mastery of the material.
· Try not bury your thesis statements and main ideas. Make them obvious. But do not underline them.
· In your opening paragraph have a sentence that summarizes your main points. This is a separate sentence from your thesis statement.
· Though not being graded on, be careful with capitalization, punctuation, spelling, and grammar. The easier your essay is to read, the easier it is to follow, which makes it easier to grade.
