Final Exam Spring 2019

Instructions

Please prepare a five-page answer to one of the following essay questions.

Essay Question 1

The nation's military engagements abroad have always had an impact at home. Thus, for example, while military spending routinely boosted the nation's economy, wartime anxieties about enemy invasions often resulted in the restriction of civil liberties.

In this essay, compare and contrast the impacts of World War II and the Vietnam War on the American home front. In your answer, be sure to explain how each conflict affected the nation's economy and society. In addition, be sure to discuss how the American people responded to the nation's participation in World War II and the Vietnam War.

Please note that your essay must have an argument. In addition, you must provide extensive evidence for your argument from a minimum of five course readings (a film or documentary counts as one course reading). In addition to these five course readings, you also must cite to the class lectures.

Essay Question 2

Despite the passage of the Reconstruction Amendments, inequality remained a feature of everyday life for many, including African Americans, women, immigrants, and the working classes. African Americans and immigrants found themselves subject to racial discrimination. Women were unable to vote until the early twentieth century. Meanwhile, the nation's factory workers suffered as a result of poor wages and working conditions. Yet, in the face of these challenges, these groups fought for their political, social, and economic rights from the late nineteenth century to the present.

In this essay, discuss how two of the following groups fought for their rights (whether political, economic, or social) or the rights (whether political, economic, or social) of all Americans.

1. Women suffragists

2. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and the New Deal

3. Participants in the Civil Rights Movement

In preparing your answer, be sure to define the problems (whether political, social, or economic) faced by each group and explain how each group tried to solve these problems.

Please note that your essay must have an argument. In addition, you must provide extensive evidence for your argument from a minimum of five course readings. In addition to these five course readings, you also must cite to the class lectures.

Please note that these requirements apply to both essay questions.
