Approaches both politicians took with respect to the indigenous people of America.
Roosevelt approached the issues faced by indigenous people by pushing for two New Deal Relief programs that included the Indian Reorganization Act and the Civilian Conservation Corps, which helped in providing the needs of the indigenous tribes and protecting their culture (Rollins, 2018). Dwight Eisenhower kept up with Truman’s termination policy in relation to indigenous people and forced the groups into inexistence.
Approaches to Blacks in America
Both Roosevelt and Eisenhower were against racial segregation, with Eisenhower declaring segregation in terms of race, an issue of security in the United States. Eisenhower was responsible for the signing into law of the 1957 and the 1960 Civil Rights Acts in his efforts to eliminate segregation in terms of race in the United States (Damms, 2016). Roosevelt denounced the lynching of people publicly referring to it as murder. He also appointed a cabinet called the "Black Cabinet" with its members being African Americans for the purpose of giving advice on issues faced by people of color and also advice on race-related matters.
Both presidents’ approaches prove that they shared the same interests in relation to fighting segregation in America. However, Eisenhower did not do much in trying to protect the interests of the indigenous groups in America. He did not make any changes to the policy of termination put in place by Truman. Instead, he enforced it further, hurting the indigenous peoples in an attempt to eradicate their existence. The political situation in Roosevelt’s time was such that minority groups got allowed to take part in decision making, specifically the blacks while in Eisenhower’s time, the political situation had less participation of minority groups in decision making as his efforts to end segregation were met with a lot of opposition.
The motive of Eisenhower was to eliminate racial segregation and create an America where people got treated equally in all aspects, including education, whereby he sort to ensure that white and black kids share to the same schools without discrimination against the students of color. Roosevelt, on the other hand, was interested in ensuring that the rights of all American citizens were not interfered with. Both politicians had the interests of the common people at heart. However, Eisenhower ignored the rights of the indigenous people by enforcing a policy that was oppressive against them and focused more on the black community while Roosevelt paid equal attention to the rights of both the indigenous people and the blacks in America.
