HIST 1301 Writing Assignment

Document Analysis

This paper will require you to analyze the Emancipation Proclamation or the Gettysburg Address. Students may analyze both of they choose. A link will be provided on Blackboard where students can access these two documents. Part of the essay will require answering the following questions. Who wrote this document? When was it written? What do you think was the overall purpose of this document? What was the most important message the author was trying to convey? Does that message fit into the contemporary world of today? If so, how? Does the document convey a certain tone? If so, what is it and what examples from the document do you have to support this point? Lastly, does the author have a bias? This portion should make up between a quarter to half of your essay.

The next portion of your essay should be made up by the following. Explain how the author exemplifies or doesn’t exemplify social responsibility and personal responsibility with these documents. Social responsibility is where an individual has an obligation to act for the benefit of society at large. Personal responsibility is the ability to connect choices, actions, and consequences to ethical-decision making. (Do not go to Spark Notes, Cliff Notes, or any similar site to write this essay. The site may give you give a summary and discuss themes; however, it will not discuss the topics of social and personal responsibility. Furthermore, students are not being asked to explain the ethos, pothos, etc. of this document. If you are having trouble writing this essay then it your responsibility to ask the instructor for assistance.)

Papers need to be double-spaced, 12-point font Times New Roman, with standard margins or they will be points. Moreover, this essay needs to be three full pages or at least one thousand words in length. Anything less than that will result in points being deducted. In addition, the last day to submit this assignment is on Friday, December 6th, 2017 at 11:30 p.m. A module will be available to submit your essay.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Please make sure that your essay is written in a Microsoft word document. If it’s not then Blackboard won’t open the document which means it can’t be graded. Essays submitted through e-mail or Course Messages won’t be accepted. Keep in mind that Blackboard has a program that scans for plagiarism. If your essay shows anything above 50% then it will receive a zero. If any outside sources are utilized, such as the textbook, they must be properly documented in footnotes or it will be considered plagiarism. Lastly, make sure your name and class appear on the first page.
