Essay Questions
Answer One of the following in an essay which is well organized and
clearly written. Please support your argument with examples drawn from
the text and make sure that the material has been proofread before
turning it in! Give me the who, what, where, and when of the
question. Length: 10 paragraphs, minimum. This is the minimum you
should attempt to turn in but the best grades usually go to students who turn
in substantially longer essays. Please be aware of this fact.
1. Discuss the United States’ participation in the Second World War. Your
answer should include discussions of the following: how the U.S. moved
from neutrality to full involvement by December, 1941; the organization of
the war effort on the home front and problems encountered; the development
of a military strategy for fighting a two-front war and the implementation of
that strategy in Europe and then in the Pacific. Why did the United States
decide to use the atomic bomb against Japan and not against Hitler’s
Germany? What were the results of that decision?
2. Discuss the causes of the Depression of 1929. What was life like during
this time? How did American workers and businesses respond? What was
President Hoover’s attitude toward the Depression? What type of solutions
did he try? Why did they fail?
3. Explain how Franklin Roosevelt tried to solve the problems of the
Depression of 1929. What were his basic strategies and how were they
different from those tried by Herbert Hoover. Describe the most important
programs he implemented in his New Deal to support his goals of relief,
recovery and reform. Did the New Deal work?
