HIS 338 Milestone Two: Annotated Bibliography Overview An annotated bibliography is a list of citations to books, articles, and documents that is followed by a concise paragraph that evaluates the source and its relevance to your topic. The goal of an annotated bibliography is to refine one’s information literacy while engaging in the act of being a subject matter expert. Students should begin their research with the SNHU Shapiro Library History Guide and the resource links provided in each module. For purposes of this assignment, students should not utilize conventional web searches for primary or secondary source documentation without prior approval of the instructor. As noted below, students should pay attention to six specific details in their annotation:

1. The authority and the qualifications of the author 2. The scope and main purpose of the text 3. The relation of other works, if any, in the field 4. The major bias or standpoint of the author 5. The audience and the level of reading difficulty 6. A summary comment

Foletta, Marshall. “’The Dearest Sacrifice’: Catharine Maria Sedgwick and the Celibate Life.” American Nineteenth Century History 8.1 (2007): 51-79. In this scholarly journal article, Foletta, professor in History at UC Berkeley, launches a close examination of the life and works of Catharine Maria Sedgwick, focusing on her writing of female characters. This article is geared toward scholars, writers, and students in the field of American history and American literary history and examines the trends in literature before and during Sedgwick’s time as well as her reception as a writer and her publication in periodicals. Although I will not be addressing Sedgwick directly in my essay, I am finding that Foletta presents a good deal of powerful information and analysis on the nature of women’s writing in general and that some of his points, such as that at this time, women began rebelling against a “flat and mythic reduction of character” (Foletta, 52), will prove extremely useful to my thesis overall.
