Social History of the Africans and Indians In Florida

African slaves and the Indigenous people of the Southern United States and Northern Mexico were targets of harsh and racist treatment by both the European and American white colonizers. Due to the marginalization of African slaves and Native American peoples the question of how they responded to this oppression has hardly been explored by historians. Scholars have written extensively about the separate lives of both these groups of people, including their interactions with white Europeans, but less is known about how these two groups interacted with one another.

The Everglades: Florida's Unique Landscape of Change

The Overflowed Lands Act of 1850 approved 81,000 km2 of federal land to be given to the State of Florida, which marks the start of the economic history of southern Florida. The International Improvement Fund (IIF) then used these granted lands in 1855 to encourage development by means of land reclamation. Railroad and canal companies were then given land in an effort to make new lands accessible for colonization. In the late 1800’s, land drainage projects were headed by prosperous entrepreneurs and the first railroad completed its connection with Miami, serving to provide access to southern Florida

The Dade Massacre: Florida Memory

- Treaties associated with Payne’s Landing and Fort Gibson in 1832, under the Andrew Jackson administration were written, to remove Seminole Indians out of Florida to the Westside of the Mississippi River. The Seminole Indians were to be made part of the Muscogee Creek Nation and would be given a piece of the countryside and re-admitted to all privileges as members of the same. After years of no progression to the end state, a show of military presence was necessary and was placed into order. On 21, December 1835, six companies throughout the Florida peninsula, were ordered to go to Fort Brooke in Tampa Bay to aid in the eviction of the Seminole Indians

British Rule in Florida

- ... Soon after the attack the American Revolutionary War was almost about to happen. Some loyalists remained well..loyal to the British during that time period. The 2 sides as in the east and west side were very royal colonies. Even though the Spain had ruled for a longer period time. The British had one advantage they were able to recruit permanent settlers. Most of Florida's officials were looking to save money to keep public services going. The Proclamation of 1763 outlawed settlement west of the appalachians to the newly acquired Florida

The Cultures of Miami, Florida

- Located on the lower east coast of Florida the city of Miami is bordered by the Biscayne Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Going east from the city the islands of Key Biscayne and Miami Beach help shelter the bay from the Atlantic Ocean, giving Miami a naturally protected harbor. The elevation of the city never rises above 40 feet and within most neighborhoods the elevation stays under 10 feet. The highest undulations are the Miami rock ridge which is found along the coast. A majority of the city lies on the shores of Biscayne Bay which contains hundreds of natural and artificially created islands, the largest being Miami Beach and South Beach.
