Essay Questions (30pts.)

Answer One of the following in an essay which is well organized and

clearly written. Please support your argument with examples drawn from

the text and make sure that the material has been proofread before

turning it in! Give me the who, what, where, and when of the

question. Length: 10 paragraphs, minimum. This is the minimum you

should attempt to turn in but the best grades usually go to students who turn

in substantially longer essays. Please be aware of this fact.

1. Discuss the phenomena of American consumerism of the 1920s. What

inventions and technologies made mass consumption and production possible?

What sectors of the population were specifically targeted and what were some of

the products marketed to them? Who were some of the personalities involved in

mass production? What about advertising? Tell me about how this worked and

why it emerged so strongly at this time?

2. Discuss the United States’ involvement in World War I. How was the U.S.

drawn into the war between 1914 and 1917? How did Wilson organize the

American war effort, manage the domestic economy and attempt to promote unity

behind the American cause? What was the most negative aspect of Wilson’s

domestic policy regarding World War I?
