Discussion : Minimum of 300 words
What do you think about when you hear the word civilization? Do we really need it in order to survive and prosper on this planet? The real question is whether we can live above subsistence without the technological innovations that densely populated settlements generate. Moreover, the question is not as frivolous as it may seem at first glance. Many cultures throughout human history consciously decided not to take the route toward nucleated settlements and the resultant consequences. The Celts represent one example from the time line of our course of a people who preferred not to have cities. The Avars, a Turkic-speaking people from Central Asia, were pastoral nomads who acquired cities during the course of their conquests, yet they used cities in ways that would strike average city dwellers as most strange.
Define civilization in your own words, based on your understanding of the nine characteristics commonly associated with civilizations presented in Section 2.1 of your textbook, World history: The human experience to 1500.

Guided Responses: Respond to two colleagues who have examined a different society than the one you selected for your initial post. In each substantive post of at least 150 words, compare the society you chose to the one your colleague has examined. What similarities or differences do you see? What factors might explain your observations?

· When I hear the word civilization, I think of the famous cities and the vast network of different individuals within its limits. Civilization would have a government, social structure, and ways of sustaining itself and its citizens, i.e., water, sewage, food, currency. Through the growing population of cities and the opportunities, nomadic life could have become less popular. With more citizens in such proximity to each other combined with the low sanitation of most ancient cities, you would risk disease and develop sickness that could lead to an epidemic. Today’s civilizations stand a great deal different than an ancient culture. The primary key factor would be the technological advancement, with even ancient Rome being confined to the Iron age over its lengthy course. The society I have chosen is Mesopotamia. Located in the eastern Mediterranean, Mesopotamia was a collection of diverse cultures, which their religion, literature, and laws tied them together. One prominent characteristic that makes Mesopotamia a civilization is religion. The Sumerians worshipped numerous gods, with each city-state having a leading god. “The Sumerians built temples to honor these gods, and each temple had its priests, who performed a host of tributary ceremonies, festivals, and sacrifices to please the gods.” (Mahdavi, F., 2012). The writing system, called “Cuneiform,” was used to keep track of receipts and payment of goods such as livestock and grains. They would draw the shape and how much they were selling. With time the writing tablets were used to record, “economic transactions, religious mythology, hymns, proverbs, and religious essays in detail for future generations.” (Mahdavi, F., 2012). The writing system played such a vital role in the advancement of this civilization and many to come, including the United States. Both religion and a writing system are characteristics found in chapter 2.1 of the reading and are crucial aspects that every civilization, advanced and ancient, would comprise of. · 1. Define civilization in your own words, based on your understanding of the nine characteristics commonly associated with civilizations presented in Section 2.1 of your textbook, World History: The human experience to 1500.
What is civilization? I think the word civilization means that the people would get together at a social even within their cultures and talk about whatever their culture does. Also, civilization would start out with the basic coexisting and then go a little bit farther in their culture to become a multi-conglomerate group.
2. Choose one society from Week 1 Civilization Tour, which includes Mesopotamian, Olmec, Egyptian, Harappan, and Ancient Chinese societies.
I decided to choose Olmec (500-300BC) because the mask looked like a Halloween mask at first until I started to read about the Olmen. Then, it said that they ruled and was known to us as the Mexico people which I didn't know at the time. The Mexico people approximately 1,000 years ago or more were or are the oldest in the Central America. They were also known to be found in the other civilization, for example, Mayan and the Aztec. A guy named Carlo Winters said that the Olmec's played a role in the Mexican culture and their heritage as well.
3. Based on at least two of the characteristics listed in Section 2.1, explain why you have chosen society can be considered a civilization.
The two characteristics I choose was Social order and Religion because the Olmecs decided to set apart and was considered that the civilization was that the writing that they have found. The archeologists did find some kind of writing back in 2004 which was a hieroglyphic writing that was the Olmec writing. This writing was discovered by the Mesoamerican or the Mayan writing before the aforementioned was ever discovered back in 2004. So, the writing that was found came from the Mesoamerican cultures writing. Within the Olmec society, the civilization could be classified as the Urbanization. The Olmecs had the calendars and hieroglyphics which had the height from the 700 and 400BC. The Olmecs was the first ones to have a Mesoamerican ballgame, writing, and epigraphy.

Learning Activity
The purpose of this activity is twofold. First, it will help you hone your library research skills, so you can locate books and journal articles to support your written work. Use this exercise to explore sources useful for your Final Project.
Second, it will help you focus on analyzing sources by writing annotations. What is an annotation? An annotation is a brief commentary on a scholarly book, chapter, journal article, or primary source that summarizes its central points and main argument. This activity will help you learn how to identify and explain an author’s thesis statement in the case of scholarly articles, chapters, and books. By developing an awareness of thesis statements in scholarly works, you will be better able to formulate thesis statements in your own work. In the case of primary sources, you will identify key elements of the source that will help you analyze its significance. Attention to significance will help you refine your critical thinking skills and construct arguments that support your thesis statements. This is a collective endeavor; everyone contributes by posting annotations to build an annotated bibliography that we can all draw from when developing our work.
For this activity, you are to look for a scholarly source that you find interesting and relevant to the week. Choose from the sources bundled in the HIS103 Research Guide website for help finding appropriate sources. Another good place to look is among the supporting documentation that accompanies the weekly tours. Remember to think ahead about your Final Project as you make your choices.
Follow the Annotated Bibliography Builder Template. Fill out the information outlined on the template and post it by Day 3.
Comment / Critique: By Day 7, provide a 150-word response to two classmates, explaining why you find the article or primary source interesting or potentially useful for the Final Project.
