Welcome to Week 4! This week’s readings and discussions will focus predominantly on the role that theory plays both in the practice as well as strategy of effective human services practice. More specifically, we will examine how well-being and happiness perspectives (with a particular emphasis on Martin Seligman’s positive psychology theory) can be utilized to better support clients, while considering theories related to organizational effectiveness (focusing on The Sanctuary Model (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. as an example). You will also continue researching your social issue by focusing on how human service professionals are aligned with it.

While the concepts of well-being and happiness are not new phenomena, the last few decades have seen a range of scholarly investigation addressing their use in domains such as psychology, health, and life meaning and purpose. Part of this week’s reading provides the opportunity to delve into this topic area, and involves looking into the life and works of the creator of the concept known as “Positive Psychology,” Dr. Martin Seligman, in which he identifies three elements pertinent to it: positive emotion (the elements that make for, what Seligman argues, a “pleasant life,” such as pleasure, comfort, etc.), engagement (the “engaged life” of being immersed and present in activities) and meaning (finding purpose and value) (Authentic Happiness, 2015). As one of several different theoretical frameworks evaluated on well-being, Jayawickreme, Forgeard, & Seligman (2012) note that this first iteration of the perspective was enhanced to include two additional elements: positive relationships and accomplishment. Thus, the revised theory speculates that well-being involves “pursuing and attaining” one of the five elements identified. As part of your preparation for the first week’s discussion, review the TED talk video titled Martin Seligman: The New Era of Positive Psychology (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. and consider its core tenets: What application, if at all, does it have in the human services field? What is your appraisal of the strengths or limitations of the theory as they exist? Take some time to reflect on these questions as you address the week’s first discussion prompt.

In the second discussion, we turn our attention to how theory can be used in the organizational success of health and human service entities. Specifically, Chapter 6 of Making Strategy Count in the Health Human Services Sector is dedicated to the overview of how theory is applied to an initiative known as The Sanctuary Model. To provide some background context on this effort, the Model (which was developed in the 1980s and led by Dr. Sandra Bloom) sought to improve how individuals and entities oversaw trauma-related care in the hospital setting through organizational change efforts (Sanctuary Institute, 2011). According to the website, the Model combines three perspectives: business theory, trauma theory, and the concept of therapeutic communities (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. (the term “therapeutic community” evolved through efforts conducted in the United Kingdom). Furthermore, Bloom and Sreedhar (2008) note that the Model is intended “…to guide an organization in the development of a culture…” (p. 49) and is characterized by seven core features: non-violence, emotional intelligence, social learning, shared governance, open communication, social responsibility, and growth and change. Ultimately, the Sanctuary Model has been an effective example of how culture can be shaped through the use of theory, resulting in more comprehensive care for recipients. As you consider theory at the organizational level, what relevance might it have in the development of your own proposed model intervention? Keep this in mind as you progress in writing your Capstone project.

Along the lines of the Capstone project, this week’s written assignment will require that you examine different career paths that are associated with your selected social issue. For instance, if you’re interested in addressing the issue of child welfare, where and how might social workers, case managers, or child advocates be utilized? The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Occupational Outlook Handbook (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. is a great resource to help you get started.
