Will Facebook enter the Chinese market?
Echo chamber exists on the internet. Facebook declares that they are trying to make a deal with China’s government. As a member of the Global Network Initiative, Facebook is struggling with finding a balance between human rights and government surveillance. Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Facebook, showing a good attitude towards the Chinese government (Pham, Sherisse, 2018). China, as the second largest economy in the world and has the potentially largest users in the world, attracts lots of social media and search engines since it could generate huge profit. However, I think it is difficult for Facebook to enter the Chinese market in the short term.
Before answering my view, people should consider following question firstly: Why is Facebook banned in China? People all know that not only Facebook but also Google, Twitter and some famous social media around the world are banned in China. What caused this situation? Facebook and also social media have always advocated the right to freedom of speech. However, the Chinese government aimed to prevent political content, there are many things on Facebook that they can't review and delete. Google was also free to browse in China before and was later turned off. The Chinese government always want to prevent people from infiltrating, subverting, and engaging in politically sensitive things when they use internet website or social media. Facebook has a stronger universal value subversion than Google since Google is a search engine, what it could provide is only consulting service when people search some keywords, however, Facebook has the ability to connect and disseminate information proactively, which have tremendous influence for users. For example, Facebook could be used in China before 2009. However, the Chinese government investigated that the Xinjiang, ETIM riots at that time, the criminals used Facebook to communicate and publicize their ideas which aren’t conducive to national unity. The riot leads to nearly 200 people were killed, most of them are women and children. The Chinese government asked Facebook to help investigate. Facebook said, "Hey, they are just freedom fighters, exercising freedom of speech." So, that’s why the Chinese government banned the use of Facebook in China.
The Filter bubbles is a new word that has mentioned by Eli Pariser. After seeing his video, people are nervous about the situation that the internet influences us. Most writers or authors stand out to criticize how filter bubbles shape person’s characteristic and narrow users’ mind because it always shows information we want to see instead of information we need to see. Bill Gates mentions that filter bubble is a serious problem because it could narrow people’s worldview and you don't have an opportunity to share points of view with people who hold the different view (Kevin, J, 2017). However, it’s true that filter bubble or echo chamber exists in our internet environment. It also has influence for usage. However, people can’t just notice the disadvantage of filter bubbles or echo chambers. In addition, Kate O’Neill, founder , and CEO of [meta]marketer show the attitude that filter bubbles won’t influence people’s life or personality. We’re savvier, as marketers, about data and analytics (Melody,2014). Filter bubbles could only show information which based on the algorithm. It’s also based on people’s interests and personality. It won’t influence people.
The Chinese government is committed to providing a safe and healthy network environment for users. With the popularity of the Internet, young people are the main force of the Internet. Because of their young age, they have not been able to improve their ability to distinguish between right and wrong. They are also very easy to believe and are affected by network information. China is the country with the most population in the world. As a country, the more people there are, the more difficult it is to control. In addition, China also needs to resolve internal unity because there are 56 nationalities. There are also great contradictions among each other. So, that’s why the Chinese government wants to control the free voice of citizens. I can't draw a conclusion for which country's political system is better since they all based on their own conditions. However, Facebook, as an international company, should know how to adapt to the specific needs of each country. Because there have been problems before, if Facebook wants to enter the Chinese market, it must have a lot of resistance.
The huge profits must make a huge sacrifice. Most people complain about of China’s political system since the leaders of country control most of the power. However, I appreciate it. As a citizen, I hope that I could live in a peaceful and comfortable country because wars and turmoil will cause great harm and loss. I feel that the network environment provided by the Chinese government is very healthy, and I very agree with this approach. Different people have different opinions. Some people consider it’s a kind of echo chamber for the internet. Yes, I also agree with this idea. However, even though it’s an echo chamber or filter bubbles, it brings peace and love for us. I think it is acceptable for us to make a sacrifice.
Does Filter bubbles or echo chambers harmful for us? It depends. For China, filter bubbles and echo chambers could bring peace and love for citizens. For other countries, it may influence people. Different countries have different answers toward this question.

Sherisse Pham writes this article to strength that Facebook is willing to enter Chinese market. He mentions human rights which is the standard of Global Network Initiative. As a member of Global Network Initiative, Facebook should follow the principles. However, Chinese government wants to control the content which is post on Facebook. It’s a huge challenge for human rights. Facebook announced: “No decisions have been made around the conditions under which any possible future service might be offered in China.” But, Facebook plans to open an innovation hub in China and want to maintain a good relationship with China.
Melody Udell mentions Eli Pariser, who shows the exist of filter bubbles and explain what is “filter bubbles”. The author wonders that if filter bubbles aren’t the threat they were once thought to be, how can marketers use them to create meaningful connections between company and online consumer? Kate O’Neill, founder and CEO of [meta]marketer show the attitude that filter bubbles won’t influence people’s life or personality. We’re savvier, as marketers, about data and analytics.

In the article, author talks about Bill Gates. Gates consider filter bubbles could narrow users’ worldview. But the Microsoft co-founder also believes that the filter-bubble problem will self-correct over time. Gates also says that education is a counterbalance of filter bubbles.
