Hereditary.docx“Hereditary” is a horror movie that was directed by Ari Aster who was dealing with the death of her mother Ellen. The key theme in the movie is intergenerationality whereby something hereditary is passed on to one without any knowledge or approval. A child who is yet to be born has no say on the color of eyes, the personality and the allergies he/she may have. This may be the key reason why family history affects the behaviors of present family members. In the film, it is evident that mental illnesses run in families and are passed from one generation to the other, having no escape for the new generation.
Hereditary is a film about a family that is haunted after the passing of the grandmother. At the beginning, one can easily guess a straightforward story but as the film continues, the complex nature of evil is revealed. Paimon is a very powerful demon that is believed to offer great knowledge and riches. The demon wants to be resurrected and this can only happen through the body of an appropriate human. The direct bloodline of the grandmother are appropriate hosts for the resurrection of Paimon. The bloodline has the capacity to bring Paimon back to the world as a great ruler.
The film indicates that grandmother Ellen was not just a withholding mother but was also a demon worshipper and passed this demon one generation after the other. Transgenerational trauma is evident in many families and this film affirms that trauma and mental illnesses can be passed through DNA. The family of Annie has a history of mental illness and trauma. The demon that the family passes from one generation to the other can be observed as traumas of death and illness which have not been addressed and the family keeps on trying to bury them.
