Henry Street Assignment

The following questions should be answered after reading the chapters assigned in the Nies and McEwen text (2019) and assigned reading/viewing of the Henry Street Settlement Exhibition online ( https://www.thehouseonhenrystreet.org/exhibition/ (Links to an external site.) ). Students are expected to have thoroughly explored the online exhibition to answer these questions.

The assignment has 3 questions. Students should type their answers in a Word document, being sure to include the question numbers. Points will be assigned based on the thoroughness of answers provided.

Be thorough in your responses, exhibiting critical thinking and synthesis of the required readings/media content.

Question 1

1. Define the three levels of prevention.

2. Then give a contemporary example of each level of prevention.

3. Think about the services provided by the Henry Street Settlement in the late 1800s/early 1900s. Which levels of prevention did the settlement address (may be 1, 2, all, or none)?

4. Give examples of each level of prevention identified above by Henry Street in the late 1800s/early 1900s.

Question 2

1. Describe the term “upstream thinking”, citing your text as needed.

2. Were the activities completed by the Henry Street Settlement consistent with “upstream thinking”? Why or why not?

3. Then, list the four values/assumptions of the Critical Theoretical Perspective as described in your text.

4. Using the Critical Theoretical Perspective, explain how the Henry Street Settlement addressed the impacts of social, political, and/or economic conditions on the health of their community.

1. List the five social determinants of health, as given by the website above.

2. Choose one and explain how the Henry Street Settlement addressed issues related to that social determinant of health within the population served during the late 1800s/early 1900s.

3. Then, explain how the Henry Street Settlement addresses those issues today.
