“A Clean, Well-Lighted Place” by Ernest Hemingway
A Clean, Well-Lighted Place is a clear example of Hemingway’s serious concerns in the aftermath of the war since he believed in a lack of spiritual beliefs among individuals. He went ahead to make some recommendations about how individuals should address their spiritual crisis. Based on the fiction story, Hemingway narrates an older man who once attempted to end his life and regular drinks at the restaurant. The loneliness of the older man makes the waiters sympathize with his situation. However, the waiter tries to enter an old bar to help them comprehend the predicaments of the older man. Hemingway uses Insomnia to symbolize some of the disillusionment individuals experience whenever they are hopeless. Insomnia in the narrative is a symbol of disillusion o hopelessness felt by the old waiter about their life. Although he dismisses his emotional feeling as insomnia, it is evident that it showcases more than that. He appears to emerge from a generation that witnessed some of the most devastating issues during the first World War. He also dismisses the concept of disillusionment as a health condition and argues that many people around the World may acquire it by stating that "many must have it’.
Hemingway uses two reasons to make the reader comprehend that the older waiter or the chief protagonist of the narrative is experiencing disillusionment or hopelessness. First, his empathy towards the older man who attempted to commit suicide is a true testament that the old waiter is like the older man relative to the young waiter. He realizes the older man lacks people around him except his niece and the suicide attempt was a clear attempt for him to end his hopelessness and disillusionment. Moreover, when praying, the old waiter tends to replace most of the words in the Lord's prayer with “nada”, a Spanish phrase for hopelessness. This suggests that religion and Catholicism, which previously many people have used as a replacement for their nothingness, does not satiate people anymore. Besides, based on the outcome of the narrative, it is apparent that health conditions are chosen with remarkable care. For instance, insomnia is a symbol since it curbs an individual’s sleep which helps people shut their bad feelings and emotions. However, insomnia makes sense of disillusionment endless, as evidenced by his lack of sleep.
