Cardiovascular lab report instructions – effect of 2 activities intensity of heart rate

Data collection -10/1/2018

Lab report due – 10/17/2018

This is a group project – you should work with your lab partners to complete all parts of the assignment.

· The grade will be a combination of:

· Scientific writing - 80% of the grade

· Peer-evaluation – 20% of the grade

Scientific assignment:

· You will submit one assignment per group

· Assignment should be submitted typed in font size 12, line space 1.5 AND uploaded to the Turnitin.com via canvas (one copy per group). Hard copy of the lab report should be submitted in class on the due date – 10/17/2018

Peer evaluation:

· The form is found on Canvas linked to the assignment

· EACH member of the group should evaluate ALL group members INCLUDING SELF

· The electronic version of the evaluation should be uploaded to Canvas and NO hard copy is needed.

Collecting data:

On 10/1/2018 we will check the effect of 2 types of activity on the heart rate – 2 rounds of fast walk around the hallway and 1 minute of jumping jacks.

· At least 2 students from each lab group need to take part in the physical activity.

· The 2 activity types measured separately; each has a potential to affect cardiovascular system

· Heart rate at rest should be recorded before each activity. You should use the same method and location of heart rate measurement throughout the experiment

· Data will be collected in an already existing file that includes data from previous semesters. The file include the following information:

· subject’s age,

· subject’s gender

· Number of times the subject exercise/week.

· Heart rate at rest and after each activity

· DO NOT INCLUDE name or any other information that can identify the subject.

The entire data set will be shared with the entire class after the experiment is done

The assignment should include the following parts in the submitted file:

1. Report name

2. Hypothesis

3. detailed description of the experimental procedures and materials used. Use a format of bullet points to describe it.

4. Results presentation (see detailed instructions below)

5. Conclusions drawn from results (NOT DISCUSSION)

2. Hypothesis – write as IF…..Then…..(refer to the intensity level and not the specific exercise that you performed)

3. detailed description of the experimental procedures and materials used. Use a format of bullet points to describe it.

4. Presenting results

· You should analyze the results of the entire data set supplied after the experiment is done.

· The analysis must address the effect of the 2 activities on heart rate – as is without adding other factors.

· You need to calculate averages and present it in table AND in graph (do not present individual results as listed in the data Excel file)

· Do not add any text to the results section

· Tables and graphs should be self-explanatory. To achieve that, tables and graphs should be appropriately labeled (see examples below):

· Example of good title:

Comparison of blood progesterone levels (ng/ml) of dairy cows during the luteal phase in two experimental groups: Control (no treatment; n=25) and PG (3 prostaglandin injections given 6 hours apart starting on day 5 after estrus; n=22).

· Example of insufficient title:

Comparison of progesterone in 2 groups of cows

· Your group CAN also consider gender/age/level of activity (you do not have to analyze additional parameter, but if you decide to do it, choose only one additional parameter and present it separately).

5. Conclusions drawn from results (NOT DISCUSSION) – do not describe the results again, do not describe the experiment. Look at the results you presented and tell me what is your conclusion (compare to the hypothesis you wrote)
