Writing Lesson Plans
GRADE LEVEL: 5
THEME: Healthy Plate
LESSON OUTCOME/LEARNABLE PIECE: After a discussion on the food guide pyramid,
the student will be able to create a healthy plate with 90% accuracy.
EQUIPMENT/MATERIALS: Paper plates, crayons, markers, color pencils, ruler, plastic food
on kidney table ( doughnuts, cheese, crackers, fries, chicken wings, ice cream, broccoli, carrots,
rice, chips, cookies, milk, water, soda, chocolate chip cookies, pasta, and candy).
PROTOCOLS:
Start Command: The teacher will tell the students when it is time for their group to go make a
plate at the kidney table.
End Command:
INSTANT ACTIVITY: The teacher will ask the students to go to the kidney table and make a
plate based on what they eat every day. Then the teacher will ask a few students to share the
contents of their plate.
SET INDUCTION: To stimulate student interest in the lesson, the teacher will ask the students
to watch a YouTube video about a basketball game (junk food vs. healthy kids). After watching
the video, the teacher will initiate a discussion on the importance of eating healthy.
PRACTICE/APPLICATION: First, the teacher will show the students a picture of a colorful
plate called MyPlate (replaced Food Guide Pyramid). Next, the teacher will tell the students that
each section of the place represents a food group (red-fruits, green-vegetables, purple-proteins,
brown-grains, and blue-dairy). Then, the teacher will tell the students that it is important that
when they are eating to include all of the colors from MyPlate on their plate. Last, the teacher
will give the students examples of foods from the food groups.
Fruits- peach, orange, strawberry
Vegetables- sweet potato, broccoli, peas
Protein-beans, beef, nuts
Grains: bread, pasta, cereal
Dairy: cheese, yogurt, milk
RESTATE/CLARIFY: The teacher will tell the students that it is important to eat food
according to MyPlate because it will help you to stay healthy. Eating healthy will help you to
grow strong, eating all of your fruits and vegetables will help you to grow strong. If you look at
the picture of MyPlate you will see that the fruits and vegetable portion are the biggest.
Activity: The students will use the materials provided by the teacher to create a Healthy Plate
based on the guidelines of MyPlate.
CLOSURE: Why is it important to eat healthy? What can you use a guide to show you what to
include on your plate when eating?
ASSESSMENT: The Healthy Plate that the students create must contain at least two servings
of each food group and they must be appropriately placed.
