Health Literacy and Person Education Appraisal/Evaluation

Health Literacy and Person Education Project: Registered Nurses are responsible for person

education that is based on an understanding of health literacy. Learners will explore health

literacy and critically evaluate an online educational item. Please review the sample projects

and recording in the Health Literacy Project Materials folder.

You are required to meet (in-person or virtually) with a person from a profession other

than nursing for this assignment. Together, you will discuss literacy, health literacy, and

how the approach to person education would be different depending on the literacy and

health literacy levels of the target population. Begin to identify who this person might be and

make arrangements to meet with him or her as soon as possible. Examples might include a

public health official, teacher, social worker, physical therapist, physician assistant, etc. (See

grading rubric below for more details.)

You must use the Readability Tool to determine readability levels. http://read-able.com/

You must use the framework at NIH: Evaluating Health Information on the Internet for your

appraisal

https://ods.od.nih.gov/Health_Information/How_To_Evaluate_Health_Information_on_the_Inter

net_Questions_and_Answers.aspx

You must use a recent and scholarly journal article.

You may choose to use the textbooks, along with the other learning materials, from this course as

resources. The e-book Parnell (2014) is highly recommended as a resource for health literacy.

You are required to provide a definition or understanding of the concepts credibility and validity.

You are also required to apply these concepts within each of the NIH criterion noted in the

grading rubric (see below). To assist in applying the concepts of validity and credibility to the

information found or not found on the website or online person education material you are

critiquing, consider reviewing the following websites to learn more about validity and credibility.

Give strong consideration to not using a dictionary definition of credibility and validity for

this assignment. Past students who have used the dictionary definitions had a more difficult time

applying the concepts appropriately.

Learners will then create a PowerPoint Presentation that addresses health literacy issues and

applies principals while critiquing an online educational item. All the information is to be

supported by current research and references must be listed (have a reference list at the end of

the PowerPoint). For this assignment, cite the website, the Readability Test Tool, and at least one

journal article. For detailed information, see the grading rubric.

***Be sure to cite and reference all sources! In-text citations occur with the information being

reported on the slides. The matching full references should be found on a reference list at the end

of the PowerPoint.***

Criteria to earn points for Health Literacy and Person Education Website

Critique

1 PowerPoint Title Page with Project Title and Author Name(s)

2 Include an introduction/purpose slide.

1. Tell the viewer that you will critique an online person education material using

the Finding Quality Information framework at NIH and principles of literacy and

health literacy.

2. Identify the name of the online person education material you will critique and

provide a few key points about the educational material you will critique.

3. Cite any evidence from the literature and be sure you have a matching reference

on the reference page.

4. For this assignment, it is easiest if you choose a website that has specific

information intended for persons, not necessarily healthcare workers like

nurses or physicians. Examples might include alz.org or cancer.org. and then

narrow down from there (e.g., “what is breast cancer?”, or “what is

Alzheimer’s?”).

Use speaker notes for information so that you do not overcrowd the PowerPoint

slides.

1 In the introduction or next slide, tell the reader you are critiquing a person education

website.

Provide the URL address to the website you are critiquing in the introduction.

4 Identify the intended population for the online person education material you will

critique. For example, if the person education material is about scoliosis, describe the

population the information is intended for—in this case parents of teenagers and

teenagers may be the population.

2 Literacy—define what literacy means

2 Health Literacy—define what health literacy means

10 1. Meet with a person from a profession or discipline other than nursing. Discuss

the concepts of literacy, health literacy, how the approach to person education

might be different depending on the literacy and health literacy levels of the

target population. You may choose to show this person the online person

education material or website you are critiquing, but this is not required.

2. Using one or more scholarly resources and the insights gained from the interview

you conducted, describe the similarities or differences between literacy and

health literacy.

3. Next, describe the connection between literacy and health literacy in your

specific target population. Incorporate the concepts that you discussed with the

person whom you interviewed (a person from a profession other than nursing).

4. Using the principles of health literacy that you have learned throughout this

course, describe why you believe the content of the online person education

material you chose is appropriate or not appropriate for the target

population.

5. On a slide and/or in the notes section of the presentation, you must indicate the

professional role and/or professional title of the person you interviewed (not their

name).

10 For the website you are critiquing, use the Readability Tool to check it for readability

levels. (Keep in mind that these tools assess the literacy levels only of the

website. The tools do not address health literacy. You must draw conclusions based

the results of the readability levels of the website and the health literacy levels of the

target population.)

Go to: http://read-able.com/

Enter the URL of the person education material you are critiquing. Click Calculate

Readability to receive a report

In your PowerPoint, report the

1. Average reading grade level

2. The age reading level

3. Tell what Flesch Kincaid Reading Ease means and what the score is for the

person education material—is this appropriate for your population?

4. Explain what Flesch Kincaid Grade Level means and what the score is for the

person education material—is this appropriate for your population?

5. Explain what Automated Readability Index (ARI) means and what the score

is for the person education material—is this appropriate for your population?

4 Use the framework at NIH: Evaluating Health Information on the Internet for your

appraisal

https://ods.od.nih.gov/Health_Information/How_To_Evaluate_Health_Information_o

n_the_Internet_Questions_and_Answers.aspx

Create a slide that introduces the need to evaluate online resources. In this section of

your PowerPoint presentation (either on a slide or in the speaker notes), include:

1. Definition or understanding of credibility

2. Definition or understanding of validity

Be sure to cite and reference scholarly resource(s) appropriately. (See above for

links to resources that describe the concepts of credibility and validity as they relate

to online materials.)

For the next 6 slides, you will apply the criteria from the NIH Evaluating Health

Information to your online person education material. You can use the NIH prompts

to help you address each of the criterion listed below. You will apply the criteria in a

summary format, using the speaker notes to elaborate on each of your answers. Be as

thorough as possible, using the questions for each criterion as a guide.

8 Date of issue or revision: Is the site current? Is the medical evidence on the site

current? What is the latest date noted on the site?

Explain how the information, or lack of information, in this section impacts the

credibility or validity of the person education material. A failure to draw a

conclusion on credibility or validity (does not have to be both) will results in a points

deduction.

8 Credentials of source: Whose name is on it and/or who runs the website?

Is there any bias or sponsorship, such as commercial uses of the website? Look for

any advertisements. If there are advertisements, do you see any bias? Is the

information tainted to sell a product?

Explain how the information, or lack of information, in this section impacts the

credibility or validity of the person education material. A failure to draw a

conclusion on credibility or validity (does not have to be both) will results in a points

deduction.

8 Accuracy and Evidence: Is the information accurate? Who is the intended

audience? Is the information appropriate for the intended audience? Is there a

disclaimer on the webpage about seeking medical advice or fact/fiction?

Explain how the information, or lack of information, in this section impacts the

credibility or validity of the person education material. A failure to draw a

conclusion on credibility or validity (does not have to be both) will results in a points

deduction.

8 Multimedia or applications: Do the multimedia/application tools work? Are you

able to navigate the website easily? Is the website well organized and the hyperlinks

work?

Explain how the information, or lack of information, in this section impacts the

credibility or validity of the person education material. A failure to draw a

conclusion on credibility or validity (does not have to be both) will results in a points

deduction.

8 Other links, tools, and resources: Does it work with any other tools and resources?

Are there links to other websites?

Explain how the information, or lack of information, in this section impacts the

credibility or validity of the person education material. A failure to draw a

conclusion on credibility or validity (does not have to be both) will results in a points

deduction.

8 Protection and Security: Is it secure? How are user interactions managed? What

information does the website collect? Does it protect your privacy? Look for privacy

policies—sometimes these are found at the bottom of the webpage. Are users able to

post to the website or ask a question? Look for an area that says “Contact us”

Explain how the information, or lack of information, in this section impacts the

credibility or validity of the person education material. A failure to draw a

conclusion on credibility or validity (does not have to be both) will results in a points

deduction.

4 Summarize four to five points of the overall presentation on a Summary Slide.

Be sure to summarize the entire presentation. You’ve critiqued the website based on

literacy (readability), health literacy (ability of your target population to apply the

information to manage their own health), the NIH criteria, and the credibility and

validity. Be sure all of these points are summarized. Make sure you include your

recommendation as to the appropriateness of website to your target population.

6 Next is the Reference(s) Slide. References should be scholarly and credible. For this

assignment, cite and reference the website, the Readability Test Tool, and at least one

journal article.

APA format is followed. This means that sources are cited on slides and referenced

on the reference page. Points will be deducted for APA formatting errors.

2 Fewer than 3 grammar or spelling errors present

Evidence of proofreading should be present by the use of correct grammar and

spelling.

4 Use an easy-to-read font and color

Use images as appropriate. Be sure you abide by any copyright laws if using

images found online.

Do not overcrowd the slides. Place the bulk of the content into the speaker notes

section of each slide.

PowerPoint is submitted to the NURS1100 Portfolio by the due date for the

assignment. Complete the portfolio verification quiz for 10 points after you place the

item in your portfolio. Failure to submit the assignment to the portfolio by the due

date will result in no credit for the10 points.

100 Total possible

Note: For this course, your Health Literacy and Person Education Project will be part of

your Nursing ePortfolio.
