Informatic Application
Paper Guidelines: Informatics Applications to Support Nursing Practice
Write a paper (minimum 8 pages- maximum 12 pages, not including the cover or reference pages) using the following steps and outline below. Please review grading rubric at end of syllabus.
Step 2. Description of Two HICT Applications. Briefly describe two health information and communication technology (HICT) applications (cite references), selected from the following list:
· Clinical information system application (select only one application, e.g., care plan; medication administration application--eMAR, CPOE, bar-coding; electronic clinical documentation; clinical decision support tools – e.g., computerized alerts and reminders) Epic EHR is not considered as one of CIS applications.
· Telehealth application in home care (select only one, e.g., home tele-monitoring for congestive heart failure [or other condition], medication management devices)
· Personal health record or patient portals (e.g., EPIC MyChart)
· Health-related applications (apps) for tablets and mobile phones (select one specific app, e.g., an app for sleep apnea or diabetes)
· Community health surveillance systems (e.g., Wisconsin immunization data system)
If you do not select the HICT application from above list, you will receive an automatic deduction of 9.5 points (1.5 points from Description and 8 points from Discussion criteria, See grading rubric).
Step 3. Discussion and Examples from Practice. For the two applications or technologies selected, discuss how each can be used by nurses to meet the specific aims/expected outcomes.
In your discussion, be sure to answer the question “How can nurses use the HICT applications to meet the following aims/expected outcomes?” The aims/expected outcomes are:
· Support safety and quality of nursing
· Facilitate continuity of care and care coordination
· Partner with patients and families to participate in health care
· Provide supporting evidence from the literature (i.e., research) for your discussion above. Include evidence that supports both advantages and disadvantages (unexpected outcomes) of each HI
· Illustrative example(s)
· Include one example (or more) for each HICT application that specifically illustrates how the application can be used by the nurse to meet each of the three aims/expected outcomes listed above. References for this example (or more) are not required.
Step 4. Student’s Perspective. Discuss your perspective regarding the unexpected outcomes or unintended consequences (i.e., areas of concern, again does not always have to be negative, can have positive outcomes) with the use of each HICT.
· Be sure to take the following into account: the complexities of the application use, context of use (e.g., patient circumstances that impact use}, and assumptions (made by the patient and/or the healthcare provider).
· Support your perspective with evidence from the literature (i.e., research).
· Suggest approaches to address unexpected outcomes or unintended consequences (i.e., areas of concern).
Examples of questions to consider: Does each the application deliver what is promised? What are the limitations of each application? What populations are overlooked with regard to the use of the HICT application or technology?
Step 5. Summary—Conclusions and Related Outcomes.
· Summarize opportunities and challenges you identified in nurses’ use of the selected HICT applicati
· Provide a conclusion about the use of the HICT applications by nurse
The following format is required for this paper. Use this outline with Level 1 and Level 2 headings to facilitate organization of your paper. Please see https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/16/ (Links to an external site.) Information in brackets [ ] does not appear in your paper.

Introduction—Explanation of Issues |
4 |
Purpose of paper, issues related to nursing’s role in and use of HICTs in healthcare are clear, concise and described comprehensively. Issues are fully supported by evidence. (4 points) |
Purpose of paper, issues related to nursing’s role in and use of HICTs in healthcare are clear and concise; understanding is not seriously impeded by omissions. Issues are partially supported by evidence. (3 points) |
Purpose of paper, issues related to nursing’s role in and use of HICTs in healthcare are stated without clarification or description. No evidence was provided. (2 points)
|
|
Description of Two HICT Applications |
3 |
Descriptions of HICT applications, selected from list provided, are clear, concise and include relevant information (3 points). |
Descriptions of HICT applications selected from list provided are concise but some relevant information is omitted or unclear (2 points). |
Descriptions of HICT applications are unclear and/or did not select from list provided. (0-1.5) points |
|
Discussion (supported by evidence) and Examples from Practice |
8/8 (16) |
Discussion of each HICT is clear, concise, organized, and supported by evidence from two or more sources. Provides at least one clear example (for each HICT) of how the nurse can use each of the HICT applications to meet identified aims/expected outcomes with evidence. (16 points: 8 points for each HICT) |
Discussion is generally clear and concise with evidence only from the textbook to support ideas. Examples of how the nurse can use each of the HICT applications to meet identified aims/expected outcomes are unclear and or lacking in supporting evidence (14 points: 7 points for each HICT). |
Discussion is unclear and/or supporting evidence is not included. Examples of how the nurse can use the selected HICT to meet aims/expected outcomes are missing, unclear and/or without support. (12 points: 6 points for each HICT)
* Discussion of selected HICT are not from list provided. 0-8 points). |
|
Student’s Perspective |
8 |
Discussion of own (or other’s) perspective regarding the unexpected outcomes (i.e., areas of concern) with the use of each HICT takes into account the complexities of the application use, context of use, and assumptions. Discussion is supported by evidence. Suggests approaches to address unexpected outcomes (areas of concern). (8 points) |
Discussion of own (or other’s) perspective regarding the unexpected outcomes (i.e., areas of concern) with the use of each HICT includes different points of view about each HICT with minimal focus on assumptions and contexts. Discussion is minimally supported by evidence or the approach to address the concern is unclear (6 points). |
One other perspective of an unexpected outcome is stated but is simplistic and obvious. Areas of concern are not clearly identified, approaches to address concerns are not suggested, and/or there is no supportive evidence. (4 points) |
|
Summary--Conclusions and Related Outcomes |
5 |
Conclusions and related outcomes (consequences and implications) of selected HICT use are logical and reflect the student’s ability to place evidence and perspectives discussed in priority order (5 points). |
Conclusion is logically tied to a range of information including opposing viewpoints. Related outcomes (consequences and implications) of HICT use are identified (4 points). |
Conclusion is inconsistently tied to some of the information discussed (selected HICTs). Related outcomes (consequences and implications) of HICT use are over simplified. (3 points) |
|
Writing and APA Format |
4 |
Writing is clear, organized, and logical. Uses APA 6th edition and required headings throughout (0-3 APA errors). Uses correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation with only 1-3 errors (4 points). |
Writing is generally clear and organized. Uses APA 6th edition and some of the required headings (4-7 APA errors). Uses correct grammar, spelling and punctuation with 4-9 errors (3 points). |
Writing is unclear and disorganized. Does not meet minimum, page number or exceeds maximum page number. Does not use APA 6th edition and/or required headings. (more than 8 APA errors) Grammar, spelling and punctuation are distracting to the reader and impair conveyance of ideas (10 or more errors). (2 points) |
