Health Genogram

Purpose:

Nurses require knowledge and skills to engage in health assessment and health risk analysis. Health assessment, in the community in particular, includes an assessment of the health of the family.  A genogram is a useful tool to for understanding the key people and relationships in a client’s life. It can also help identify patterns within those relationships and generational patterns which may affect the health of individuals in the family.

Objectives:

At the end of this activity, the student will be able to:

1. Clearly present family structure by graphically demonstrating relationships between three generations in a family.

2. Clearly present the health history of individuals in the family using approved symbols and abbreviations.

3. Analyze graphic representation for the phenomenon of generational repetition of health problems or risks.

4. Create ONE family goal to address one identified risk factor.

Course Outcomes:

This activity aligns with several of the course outcomes as stated below:

1. Use the principles of critical thinking to understand health promotion priorities for all individuals and families.

2. Examine effective methods for health promotion and health maintenance for individuals and families at every stage of development.

3. Analyze the environmental, biological, and psychosocial risk factors for disease and disability.

4. Demonstrate critical thinking through analysis and interpretation of data and the development of individualized health education solutions.

Instructions:

1. Review the PowerPoint presentation on Genograms in the Family Assessment module in Brightspace.

2. Complete a health genogram on a family member or peer. Students will demonstrate the process of identifying and sketching the family structure, incorporating the health history and family relationships.

3. Analyze data for significant patterns of risk for health alterations.

4. Identify a family goal to ameliorate one family health risk.
