THE GOVERNMENT AND HEALTHCARE 5
Introduction
The government plays a significant role as far as healthcare is concerned. The government aims to ensure that it's citizen are safe. They achieve their objective by safeguarding their health. In the midst of this responsibility, there are a few challenges that the government is likely to face. Therefore, this paper discusses the challenges that have become a devastating nightmare to the government of the United States focusing on the various level of government and their functions.
Issue in American Healthcare System
Access to medical care is a major issue due to the inflated cost of medical services. Commonwealth Fund carried out an international survey and reported that the US performs poorly in healthcare compared to other developed countries (Bennet, 2013). The report established that almost twenty-five percent of adults in the US failed to pay medical bills or faced a challenging time when paying them as compared to France which recorded thirteen percent and less than five in seven other countries (Bennet, 2013).
Two Solutions to the Issue
Medical Insurance
The number of American citizens under any insurance policy is low. The government should come up with a strategy that ensures that every American gets an insurance cover, for example, the Affordable Care Act that enabled many low-income American citizens got insurance (Zwelling & Kantarjian, 2014).
Medical Subsidies
The government should enforce medical subsidies that limit the out-of-pocket costs charged by medical insurance companies. Many Americans will have access to affordable health insurances. There should be subsidies for specific household levels so that not all people pay the same. This strategy is a more inclusive plan for all Americans.
The Preferable Solution
Medical insurance and medical subsidies are the preferred solutions to solve the issue of excessive cost of medical services. Medical insurance is a suitable solution to the crisis in the American healthcare system due to the fact that it has ensured over a substantial number of Americans get medical insurance (Zwelling & Kantarjian, 2014). The secret behind this success is making the insurance policy affordable so that many people can access insurance.
Role of the Level of Government
Federal is responsible for all the issue affecting the whole nation like national defense, foreign relations, security on the borders, public safety among others (Roberts, 2017). The state is responsible for handling all the affair that impact the people in a specific state (Roberts, 2017). The local government is commissioned by the state government only works on a specific jurisdiction performing duties such as maintenance of county roads, public facilities such as libraries, the collection of garbage among other services (Roberts, 2017).
The Roles of the Federal Branches of Government
Legislative – It is responsible for lawmaking in the United States (USA.gov, 2017). It is made up of the Senate and House of Representatives.
Executive – The executive of the branch is responsible for law enforcement by the coordination of the president, vice president, and cabinet members (USA.gov, 2017).
Judiciary – The Judiciary is responsible for the interpretation of laws and the numerous ways in which the laws apply. It also provides checks and balances for the other branches (USA.gov, 2017).
Conclusion
The prohibitive cost of medical care as the major challenge that the United States faces. Therefore, medical subsidies are the most appropriate strategy as it will ensure each citizen has access to medical care. The federal government and executive enforce laws while the legislature makes the laws. The judiciary provides checks and balances for the two other branches.
