Consider the expected physical development pathways as described in your textbook, and compare and contrast the observed developmental pathway of one of the characters in the book relevant to their age / stage of life at various time points. Is that person’s physical growth / development what you would expect? What environmental influences and / or behaviors does the character engage in that promotes gross and fine motor skills?
3. Describe how Mason’s decisions and behaviors you observed might be influenced due to changes in the brain during middle childhood and adolescence. Be sure to discuss risk-taking behaviors. 4. Considering threats to health and wellness described in the textbook, what specific threats did you observe in the family? What healthy behaviors did you observe that promote healthy and wellness? What impact do you expect these behaviors will have on future health and wellness? 5. According to Piaget, children ages 7 to 12 are thinking and learning primarily in the concrete operational thought stage. What specific evidence / examples did you observe in Mason that reflect this stage of cognitive development? Similarly, describe changes that you observed as he transitioned into adolescence and the formal operational stage. 6. According to Vygotsky, children gradually grow intellectually and begin to function on their own because of the assistance that adult and peer partners provide. Who are the adults and peer partners that had a major influence in Mason’s life and contributed to his opportunities for cognitive growth? How did they have an influence? What, if any, elements of “scaffolding” did the adults and peer partners demonstrate in their interactions with him? 7. Teens occasionally experiment with drugs and alcohol in Boyhood. How does the movie view these sequences? Is it right or wrong for teens to experiment? What are the consequences, if any of these actions? Make sure to incorporate key terms from the textbook. 8. Consider the socioeconomic (SES) status of the family and how it changed overtime. What influence does SES sometimes have on children’s language development? Do you think that Mason and his sister’s language development was delayed, normal, or advanced compared to what you would expect? What other influences (genetic and/or environmental) might have had an even greater influence than SES in their lives? 9. Describe at least three examples of stress that occurred in this family throughout the movie. What were the consequences of the stressors? Did members of the family employ adaptive (good), or maladaptive (bad) coping strategies? What are examples of hardiness, resilience, and coping that the characters demonstrated in the face of these adversities? Make sure to incorporate key terms from the textbook.
