Organization Regulations, Accreditation, and Standards

The standards focus on important patient, individual, or resident care and organization functions that are essential to providing safe, high quality care. ASCs are highly regulated health care facilities. Each ASC must comply with a host of statutes and regulations at both the federal and state levels. Surgical Centers are accredited and evaluated by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) and The Joint Commission.

Preanesthesia Assessment and Evaluation Record is mandatory;

§ 416.25 Basic requirements.

Participation as an ASC is limited to facilities that -

(a) Meet the definition in § 416.2; and

(b) Have in effect an agreement obtained in accordance with this subpart.

[56 FR 8843, Mar. 1, 1991]

The preanesthesia assessment and evaluation of the patient provides an overview of the patient's general health, allergies, medication history, pre existing conditions, and anesthesia history and may identify additional health issues.

3. Highlight the effect the organization’s regulations, accreditation requirements, and other standards have on risk management functions and activities. Responses should be at least 100 words.

Effects on Risk Management

Plastic surgery centers are classified and regulated as ambulatory surgical centers. Surgical centers are amongst one of the most regulated medical facilities. Organization regulations are essential for the success of surgical centers. Statutory basis covers the scope of condition that an ASC must meet. The regulations affect the entity that operates exclusively for providing surgical services to patients not requiring hospitalization and in which the expected duration of services would not exceed 24 hours following the admission. For selective surgery is still surgery and a risk.

Organizational Performance Management Systems

With risk management in place there are many businesses who fall into corrective or preventive actions. This can be as simple as education of staff or complex as litigation. The medical field is often looked at a place to receive care and less as a place of business. Before the expansion of hospitals and shift on marketing hospitals were looked at as a place to go die. Now they are looking at a place to go get better or seek wellness. Communication is essential to the quality patient care they expect to receive. As risk management it is my responsibility to ensure safety for all who enter the establishment.

4. Provide several links to relevant sources that will be useful as your learning team completes the paper.
