Organization Regulations, Accreditation, and Standards |
St. Jude is accredited by The College of American Pathologists (CAP), and Centers for Medicaid Services (CMS)-approved accreditation authority. St Jude was actually the first children’s hospital in the U.S. to earn CAP ISO15189 accreditation. CAP is voluntary and non regulatory, which means that it is not mandatory to have CAP. St. Jude has a non-discrimination and affirmative action clause where parties have to meet the requirements of 41 C.F.R. §§ 60-1.1(a), 29 C.F.R. Part 471, Appendix A to Subpart A, 41 C.F.R. § 60-300.5(a) ii and 41 C.F.R. § if applicable. These regulations require St. Jude to treat and employ regardless of their class or status.
3. Highlight the effect the organization’s regulations, accreditation requirements, and other standards have on risk management functions and activities. Responses should be at least 100 words.
Effects on Risk Management |
Saint Jude has a separate organization called American Lebanese Syrian Associated Charities (ALSAC) to organize risk management. ALSAC focuses on the mission and statement of Saint Jude and manages most of their risks while raising awareness. Because St. Jude is a nonprofit organization, most of its help comes from volunteers. Because there are so many volunteers, there are more areas prone to risks. While training is essential many volunteers at St. Jude are not appropriately trained, this is why it’s necessary for the hospital to a separate body to focus on risk management in order to provide effective safety procedures for everyone. While ALSAC focuses on the day to day operations to include risk management they also bring in 75% of the funds to operate St. Jude. |
4. Identify specific components of performance-management systems—policies and procedures, self-audits, benchmarking, complaint management, corrective or preventive action, education and training, communication, and other mechanisms—to be used by the organization. Responses should be at least 100 words.
Organizational Performance Management Systems |
Management systems that are currently in place at St. Jude are daily briefings on patient statues, active participants, committees, contractors, visiting families, etc. It is vital for the hospital to know who is in the building at all times, especially because of the high risk of transmittable diseases to patients. Outside of ALSAC, the hospital does keep its regular employees on annual continuing education sessions to better manage risks in everyone’s own department. Saint Jude tries to be involved with every aspect of the organization including travel, security, compliance, and security in efforts to keep risks a low as possible. |
5. Provide several links to relevant sources that will be useful as your learning team completes the paper.
