Administrative Interview

Over the course of careers in life we as humans often times get caught up in assuming why things are, the way that they are. At times we feel like we know more than those who are appointed over us or are our supervisors; but when do we think about why they make the decisions that they do. Through the course of this interview we will hear why people who are program directors and healthcare administrators make the decisions they do, and what they base their decisions on. My interview will be with my direct supervisor (Tarcie Bess) who is a Site Manager for Positive Influences Inc. Which is a Mental/Behavioral Health Provider.

The Interview

During our discussion my supervisor and I visited a few topics that I felt would directly influence her decision-making process, as well as how those decisions impact her colleagues and the work environment. As providers in a town where the majority of mental health business stems from the Hospital we are privileged to be here and we must set a precedence that will leave a great impression for future provider renewals. Our behavior and scope of practice is monitored and reviewed by not only our company, but by the schools we are in, the community, and also Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) in which we have to get accredited. There is a code of conduct and a code of ethics that must be held close because healthcare is a very delicate industry and people’s lives are dependent on it.

She was reluctant to answer some of my questions, however in her defense they may have been on a need to know basis. When I asked her what her largest influencer was when it came to making decisions, she told me “What the two entities feel is necessary, and within reason without breaking any of their rules”. By rules, she was suggesting the code of ethics. When you operate at a Site Manager level it is conceivable that you know how to act. The code of ethics ensures that how you act does not cause issues with those whom business is conducted with.

Tarcie stated that the best way to reach or attain the mission and vision is to uphold the system of values and provide the best customer service as possible. According to her everyone is a customer, even her employees; however she made certain to point out that you will not always satisfy everyone. She implicitly said that acting and working within the values that the company was founded will often enough lead to success in the eyes of the company higher ups. Her general rule is to take the best practices from the code of ethics, code of conduct, and value system to reach the vision. These expectations are set to help guide you, and that is how they govern your decision making.

Her decisions impact only a few staff, however she said that those who it impacts are the ones that matter the most. She strives to keep the vested and best interest of her staff in mind in all her decisions; since it is those few people that keep the patients happy and help build the name for the clinic that she is in charge of. Tarcie believes in allowing those to come to work and do what they are trained to do, micromanagement doesn’t work. According to her, we all have a special job that we do, and if all parts are successful then we will have met expectations. Her promise to the staff is to have an enjoyable and comfortable work environment that we can all come to everyday.

Conclusion

This brief interview was done with Tarcie; she is my immediate supervisor who happens to be a Site Manager. Her responsibility is to make smart and calculated decisions for the greater good of all parties involves. She does this by following the set rules in the code of ethics, as well as the governing rules for staff in the code of conduct.
