Running Head: MISSION, VISION, VALUES
Benchmark: Mission, Vision, and Values Analysis
Dignity Health Medical centers have a long history of giving care to those in need. Dating all the way back to 1854, there were eight nuns that came together in San Francisco that vowed to care for those in their city. They formed a medical facility called St. Mary’s Hospital which is still in operation today. This is the oldest running hospital in San Francisco and has treated those who contracted typhoid, influenza, and cholera. Then in 1986 they decided to merge two separate congregations together, and Dignity Health was born. They used the word dignity to convey an overall respect for everyone’s well-being and health. The original mission, vision, and values that helped to create this organization still ring true today. This paper will discuss the mission, vision, and values of the Dignity health facilities and the importance it conveys to the community.
The Mission, Vision, and Value Analysis of a Facility
Every hospital is built on the foundation that they want to help with the health of their community. At Dignity Health Medical Centers their mission shows where they started and what they want to do in the future. Their mission and vision are as such; “As CommonSpirit Health, we make the healing presence of God known in our world by improving the health of the people we serve, especially those who are vulnerable, while we advance social justice for all. A healthier future for all, inspired by faith, driven by innovation and powered by our humanity” (Dignity Health, n.d.). Dignity Health facilities strive to promote innovation, compassion, patient-centered care, teamwork, and have a faith-based practice. Dignity Health uses their faith and morals to grow and shape their mission, vision, and values. This is where their motto of “Hello Human Kindness” came about. Everyone who works at a dignity health facility or receives care from there will be treated with the utmost respect and compassion.
Key Factors of a Mission, the Vision, and Values
The mission and vision statements play a huge role in the strategic direction and the planning process of a facility because it shows the facility’s intentions and their goals. The direction of a facility or organization is created at the foundation and helps to lead them on a consistent path of growth in the future. In chapter 6 of our textbook it breaks down all of the factors needs to have a solid mission, vision, and value statement. According to the book a good mission statement should short and concise, memorable, broad objectives, acknowledges stakeholders, shows they have an advantage over competitors, gives off a positive message, and is followed by everyone who works at the facility. The vision should encompass the motivation behind the facility, it should be bold, grounded, should be realistic and achievable, promotes excitement, and can be adaptable. The values should have a zero tolerance for any type of violations, promote honesty and integrity, is mindful of treatment to patients and staff, and encourage commitment. The mission, vision, and values of Dignity Health are a good indicator of what they are all about. Since the creation of Dignity Health, they have clearly conveyed what their beliefs are and what they strive for.
The Christian Worldview and Mission, Vision, and Values
A worldview is the framework of how we view and make sense of the world around us. Worldviews are believed to be true and vary per individual whether from emotion, science, theology, and social order. With the Christian Worldview comes from the word of God and feeling that is the truth. There are a set of beliefs, a pattern of ideas, habits, and convictions that create a relationship with God and seeing the world through God. The values that are held within Dignity Health perfectly align with the Christian worldview because they were founded by nuns from two different congregations. The nuns believed that it was their purpose to care for the community regardless of their skin color, background, or social status. They were called the Sisters of Mercy and were fueled to give care to everyone because they were guided by their faith. By using the Christian Worldview as a base for their foundation Dignity Health has been able to create and grow their future in healthcare. These views affect the strategic planning of the facility because they help to be a guideline of the goals they want to achieve.
Strategic Planning Process
The strategies that can be used to effectively manage resources to fulfill the organization’s mission and vision is promoting programs that create more long-term goals. “Setting the objectives is normally the result of negotiations that involve consultation among units and their managers throughout the entire firm. It is an iterative, political process, with bargaining and conflict coupled with rational analysis. The process should involve both the top executives looking to create focused strategic momentum and managers lower within the organization who will be responsible for implementing the strategies intended to meet the objectives” (Moseley, 2018). The strategic planning should focus on characteristics that can be tracked with a designated unit of measurement, the end goal should be specified, create a timeline of when everything should be accomplished or completed, and have a clear leader of the plan. The end goal is to improve and increase revenue, create cost cutting measures, have new technologies to help staff grow and create patient satisfaction, expand quality of care, and foster future education for all employees to advance.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Dignity Health facilities has been around for a long time and have stayed true to the original purpose from 1854. Since their mission, vision, and values are so strong they were able to grow from a single facility to 400 care sites, 39 of which are hospitals. Staying true to their faith, patients, employees, and community they have been able to become one of the largest healthcare organizations in the nation. The strength in their mission, vision, and values helped them to plan for the growth that they were able to achieve successfully. “With a good sense of what it is capable of, in terms of resources and competencies, and what it faces in the outside world, in terms of markets and customers, competitors, and general environmental factors, an organization is in a good position to begin plotting a course into the future. An organization’s future is virtually limitless; there is an infinity of directions in which it can choose to steer itself” (Moseley, 2018)
