HBR Ideacast 520: Understanding Agile Management Agile development methods have revolutionized information technology. Now agile

methodologies are spreading a broad range of industries and functions. The widespread

penetration of agile methods is readily evidenced in a large-scale industry survey which reported

that 94% of respondent organizations were following an agile approach in 2016 (Version One,

2016). In the HBR Ideacast 520: Understanding Agile Management (Rigby, Sutherland, &

Carmichael, 2016), Darrell Rigby and Jeff Sutherland talk about agile methods, such as the

origin of agile methods, its principles, what it looks like in action, when to use agile or traditional

methods, and what senior executives have to do with Agile methods and so on. You will be able

to develop understandings of agile methods and how it works in practice with this Ideacast.

The structure of your review essay Your review essay should have the following four sections. Use headings for all sections.

Below I provide the body of text you should write in each section.

1. Introduction A good introduction encourages readers to read your essay with great interest and prepares them

to understand it better. You want to establish common ground, a shared understanding between

reader and you about the topic you will write in the following sections. Then, you will concisely

introduce what the focused topic is, and how your essay is organized. This section is usually a

single paragraph. Do NOT place the summary in the introduction and conclusion sections. If you

do so, the level of achievement will be lowered.

2. Summary Assume that you are giving someone who has never listened to the Ideacast enough detail so that

they could have a summary of the Ideacast. Your summary should NOT be a mere copy of your

worksheet or the bulk of quotes from the Ideacast. You should provide a concise, comprehensive

summary in your own words. In this section, please show me that you really listened to the

Ideacast and comprehended the Ideacast at a level where you can cogently cover the most

important parts succinctly.

3. Practical implications

3.1. IT project identification

In the first sub-section, you should identify an IT project that can be better managed with the

use of agile methodologies than traditional Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC)

methodologies in the context of your organization.

3.2. Why Agile?

In the second sub-section, you should discuss why the IT project you identified is better suited to

the agile development methodologies than the traditional SDLC methodologies, along with at

least three different dimensions, for instance, requirements specification and customer

involvement.

Practical implications should demonstrate your understanding of when to use agile and

traditional SDLC methodologies to manage an IT project. The HBR Ideacast 520, my notes

about Agile & Scrum (#11), and our textbook also cover this aspect (pp. 240 – 243).

4. Conclusion You wrap up your response essay. State overall contributions of the Ideacast, theoretically and

practically. You should also write what more you would like to know. This section is usually a

single paragraph.
