Contract analysis
A Hospitality Union Contract Then and Now
Over the past 70 years hospitality unions have made significant inroads in organizing the workers in our industry. This success has been most evident among hospitality properties in major metropolitan areas. As evidenced by the attached contracts, clubs are no exception. The unions have been able to obtain a high degree of protection and security for both themselves (the union) and their members as individuals. To highlight for you the changes which the unions have been able to secure for their members, as well as to introduce each student to the complexity of labor agreements seen in the hospitality industry today, I would like each team to do the following:
Analyze, compare and contrast the 1946 AND 1954 Country Club of Detroit labor contracts and the 2016 - 2020 Collective Bargaining Agreement between The Country Club of Detroit and UniteHere Local24, AFL-CIO (formerly Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees Union). Your written analysis should be about eight to ten pages in length and be focused on identifying "substantive" similarities and differences (or the lack thereof) between the three contracts in the areas of:
|
Wages |
Management Rights |
Training |
|
Work Schedules |
Discipline/Discharge |
Overtime |
|
Transfers |
No Strike/No Lockout |
Seniority |
|
Grievance Procedure |

|

|

Please include in your analysis factors both within and without our industry which you feel may have contributed to bringing about any changes or differences.
Be sure to factor in changes in the cost of living between 1946 and today based on the
Consumer Price Index information reviewed in class.
In the process of conducting this analysis you will learn much about clubs, unions, the general conduct of hospitality enterprises today, and the history of commercial hospitality in post-World War II North America.
Be prepared to discuss your findings in class on February 5, 2020, and to submit your written analysis at that time.
