Harlem Renaissance Art & Literature Project

As a result of World War I and the Great Migration, millions of African Americans relocated from the rural South to the

urban North. This mass migration continued through the 1920’s and contributed to the flowering of African American art,

music and literature. This new mood was most vividly expressed in Harlem, which attracted African American novelists,

essayists, poets, and journalist from all over the country and beyond. In their work, these writers explored the pains and

joys of being black in America, leaving a literary and artistic legacy that spoke to all Americans of the times.

Using the schools online databases and other suitable resources (sorry your textbook is not allowed) you will do research

and complete the following:

1. Choose an African American essayist, writer or poet of the era and write a brief biography of this author (must be at

least six complete sentences).

authors work exploring the words, meanings, message, symbolism, or context of what the author may be trying to convey

to the reader. Now select/choose a theme that you believe best represents this author’s work in relation to African

Americans and the Harlem Renaissance. Be sure to include direct references from the author’s work to support your

analysis and choice of theme.

artist’s work exploring the color, texture, words, lyrics, layout, meanings, symbols, or context of what the artist may be
