Happiness at Work (CGG @ Berkeley)
WORKFORCE OF THE FUTURE (1), Mukul Kumar Company Scenarios. What would you do?
Company A, an online store, has a four-week fully paid training process for new employees. After this training process, Company A offers its new hires a $1,000 bonus if they quit. Would you recommend this approach?
Company C, a billion dollar company with six thousand employees, is planning on changing their management style: no job titles; no promotions. To become a manager, employees would have to find other employees to agree to work with them; and raises would be decided by reviews and rankings of your peers. Would you recommend this idea?
Workforce of the Future (2)
• Company D is thinking of adopting a different vacation policy, the proposed idea is not to track vacation days for anyone in the company. Each employee –including managers- is free to take as many free days as they want without having to track days off; instead they only have to notify their managers and have their work covered. Is this a good change in policy?

} The CEO of Company B, an important airline, received a complaint letter from a customer
offended by the behavior of a flight attendant on a recent flight. At the beginning of this flight,
the flight attendant told the passengers that she didn’t have the energy to pass the peanuts,
and explained to passengers what she was going to do. She left a pile of peanut packages loose
at the front of the plane and when the plane took off, the peanuts started sliding down the
aisle so passengers could reach out and grab a pack for themselves. If you are the CEO of
Company B, how would you reply?

To become the absolute best place to work, communication and collaboration will be important, so we need to be working side-by-side. That is why it is critical that we are all present in our offices. Some of the best decisions and insights come from hallway and cafeteria discussions, meeting new people, and impromptu team meetings. Speed and quality are often sacrificed when we work from home. We need to be one Yahoo!, and that starts with physically being together.
"The past few months have proven we can make that work. So if our employees are in a role and situation that enables them to work from home and they want to continue to do so forever, we will make that happen."

"I used to think that I wanted to live in a rich country, and then I started thinking I wanted to live in a happy country, but I began to realize, it's not enough. I don't want to live in a rich country. I don't want to live in a fast-growing or competitive country. I want to live in a good country, and I so, so hope that you do too.” Simon Anholt
