Troubleshooting Guide Infographic and Alternative Text Version
Why does my scalp burn/itch after I bleached it?
Developer was too weak
There was too much pre- existing dye in the hair
Developer was too strong
Look at the undertones in the hair color before applying. Blue undertones will react with yellow/gold tones in hair
and turn it green.
Ash toners have blue/green pigments that will mix with yellow undertones and turn the hair green.
A large build-up of dye from past treatments can make it difficult for bleach to penetrate the hair cuticle
and remove color.

TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE:
At-Home Hair Color
Gone Wrong
PROBLEM EXPLANATION & SOLUTIONCAUSE
Why is the hair dye not sticking
to my hair?
Why did my hair come out yellow after bleaching?
Hair was too porous
Hair was too greasy
Used incorrect hair dye
Did not use enough developer
Hair was too clean/freshly washed prior to bleaching it
Bleach was left on scalp too long
Bleach was too weak
Bleach was rinsed too early
Hair has been excessively chemically processed
-Use a cuticle repairing, or protein rich oil for
healthy hair.
Heated, hairstyling tools and chemical processes
create porous hair that does not take color well.
Heads produce natural oils that protect the scalp from
harsh chemicals. Too much oil will make hair color slip off.
-Choose toners or dye with warm undertones
(like red or pink) to cancel out the green
tones.
Bleach reacts with Developer to create oxidation and cause hair to lighten. Without the correct strength or amount of developer, oxidation
will not properly occur.
-Although a certain amount of hair oil is good for growing and repairing healthy hair, avoid processing overly-oily hair.
-Use a stronger developer such as 30 or 40 volume.
-Carefully read the instructions and mixing ratio
on bleach pack before proceeding.
-Use a high quality hair color remover or clarifying shampoo to get rid of excess color and
make bleaching easier.
Heads produce natural oils that protect the scalp from harsh
chemicals. Freshly washed hair will be missing this barrier.
-Avoid shampooing hair 1-2 days before bleaching.
Developers with greater volume (30 or 40) are harsher on the skin and
more likely to burn the scalp. -Use a lighter developer
such as 20 volume.
-Set a timer and make sure the bleach is not left on the scalp for too long.
-Check on the hair's lightening progress often.
Bleach was left on scalp too long
-Set a timer and make sure the bleach is not left on the scalp
too long.
Bleaching is a harsh process that strips away nutrients and moisture from hair. Loss of hair's structural integrity leads to a fragile and
exposed hair cuticle that clings to water in an attempt to regain lost moisture. The hair will become
overhydrated and develop a gummy texture.
-Wash hair as little as possible with gentle, sulfate-
free shampoo.
-Use nourishing products that help safely regain hydration.
Bleach takes time to properly take effect, rinsing it off too early may leave behind the hair's natural
yellow undertones.
Weaker bleaching products may not completely remove color even if left for
the appropriate amount of time.
-Carefully read instructions on bleach pack and allow product to sit on hair for the correct
amount of time.
-Research hair products before purchasing and learn which is right for
your hair type.
