Habits 4-5 | Reading Guide

This reading guide is due by midnight on Saturday and is worth 25 points.  Read Habits 4 and 5 in Covey's book and answer the following questions.  Please save the questions and the answers in a Microsoft Word document and upload them to Moodle. Grammar counts!   Habit 4: Think Win-Win

1.  What are the six paradigms of human interaction? List them and provide a short explanation of each.

2. Define in more detail the Win/Win paradigm.  What is the foundation of the Win/Win paradigm?  List and briefly define the three character traits essential to this paradigm and then, in your own words, explain your interpretation of the three character traits essential to this paradigm. For example, how would you explain these foundation principles to your child, student, etc.?

3. Make a list of three obstacles that prevent you from applying the Win-Win paradigm more frequently. Chose one of these obstacles and fully explain how you can apply Covey's principles to overcome this obstacle.

 Habit 5: Seek First To Understand, Then Be Understood

1.  When another person is speaking, we are usually “listening” at one of five levels.  List and summarize the five levels of listening in your own words--your own interpretation.

2. The four skills, the tip of the iceberg of empathetic listening, involve what four developmental stages?   What happens at each level? 

3.  What makes Habit 5 such a powerful habit?  Cite from the Covey book, please!

4.  What are the main reasons people refuse to practice Habit 5?  Cite from Covey, please.
