Habit 1 | Reading Guide

This reading guide is due by midnight on Saturday and is worth 25 points. No late assignments are accepted. Read Chapter 1 in Covey's book and answer the following questions. Please save the questions and the answers in a Microsoft Word document and upload them to Moodle. I expect this assignment to use proper grammar/spelling/capitalization. 

I expect significant responses to these questions, meaning you really must analyze the text. A one or two sentence response is probably not good enough. Instead, I expect full paragraphs that completely explain your response. Add examples and definitely cite from the text.

 

Habit 1: Be Proactive

 

1. Define the term “proactive” in terms of the stimulus-response model.  Give an example.

2. We can use reactive language or proactive language.  Write a proactive response to the following reactive responses.

Reactive   language	����..Proactive   language
I have to go to class.
The rules won’t allow that.
That’s just the way it is.
That’s too much work; I can’t do it.

 

3. What happens when you begin to focus on your Circle of Concern? Conversely, what happens when you focus on your Circle of Influence?  Give an example of both

4. Explain the statement, “While we are free to choose our actions, we are not free to choose the consequences of those actions.” Give an example.

5.  Explain the statement, “Knowledge, skill, and desire are all within our control.”  Give an example.

6.  Answer Question 3 at the end of the chapter.

7.  If you could only use one word to describe Habit 1, what would it be? (“proactive” is already taken)
